Pregnancy Ultrasound: 8 year old, Intact Female, DSH
Dr. Lang and Sarleen had the privilege of finding kittens via ultrasound today. The patient was a previously stray, 8 year old, intact female, Domestic Short hair Feline. If you look closely you can even see their tiny hearts beating!
Spring time is the most common mating and birthing season for felines. Because of their physiology, they can have multiple litters of kittens in one season. Intact female cats, or Queens, are induced ovulators. This means that their ovaries will release eggs when they are stimulated by their outside environment. There is no set timeline and there is no limit on how often they can go into heat. They can also have litters containing kittens from multiple Tom Cat's- gross, but true.
These facts altogether make cats pretty efficient at breeding. In the veterinary world, we know all too well that cats breed too efficiently, leading to overpopulation and homelessness.
Keeping these factors in mind, please remember to spay your females and neuter your males to prevent overcrowding in our shelters.
D’rose very much enjoyed his visit to Mill Pond Veterinary Hospital today. He even danced for Dr. Prior and Selina and was rewarded with some hypoallergenic cookies!
