This will tell you how I came about to be a Canine Behavior Specialist! I grew up on a small farm in McIntosh county in Georgia. Because of a hard
upbringing, I didn't really have many friends and so the animals on the farm were
my friends! We had a horse named Trigger. With a brother named Roy Rogers,
what else would you name your horse? We also had cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, dogs
(which were
the best and most obedient bull dogs, that actually saved my life a few times)
and of course cats! I was best friends with all the animals! When I married my
husband he was already in the military, so I no longer had the farm life. But as
neighbors and friends would have trouble with their dogs, I would tell them to try
this or that. The funny thing is, it would always work! This went on for years. I was helping friends and neighbors and their friends. Then they started
asking me to do obedience with their dogs. But even after reading many books I
just didn't feel qualified and I decided to go to school. I didn't pick just any
school. I wanted to get the most bang for my buck, so to speak! Most schools
that were close to where I lived, just taught obedience. So the school I chose was
much further away but would teach you as much as you could learn for the time
you were there and it was the same price as all the other schools that taught only
obedience. So I was off to K-9 Academy in Leander, TX. Just out side of Austin. I
worked very hard for the next two months while I was there. I earned and
passed all my tests for Obedience, Behavior Modification and Narcotics / Tracking. Even more amazing, they offered me a job! Even though it was a great offer, my
place was with my husband and our two children who I missed very much and I
couldn't wait to get back to them! As we lived on base, I started training classes
and I trained 4 obedience classes. Two of them, I trained with treats and the other
two, I trained the way I train now. Even though I taught my treat classes how to
wean off the treats properly, when I went back six months later and retested
everyone, the dogs that trained with treats wouldn't obey their owner without
seeing a treat in hand. The other two classes that trained as I do now did
obey their owners! The moment I saw a troubled owner and dog find happiness
from me showing them how to solve their problems, I was hooked on helping
owners with their four legged kids and it has brought me so much satisfaction
helping them!!
