Pet sitting fun. Bama and Addie love to tug!
When my training clients always ask me about tug, it's usually because they've heard somewhere that tug is bad for dogs. When done safely and correctly, I find it can be an invaluable training tool. It's great to get arousal up and then work on bringing it back down. When tugging with two dogs simultaneously, it's imperative to watch body language and arousal levels and I would not suggest doing this if either dog has a tendency towards resource guarding.

So proud of Ziggy's progress! While he still isn't looking to actively play or engage with other dogs, he is starting to demonstrate curiosity and even came in for a sniff today. He's also making really great decisions to walk away when he feels uncomfortable as opposed to growling, barking or snapping. I'm making sure to advocate for him and only pair him with dogs that are good communicators.

Puppy Bama and Addie have become fast friends. I will be helping their mom take care of them with daily drop in visits while she is at work.
Zing Dog Training offers in home private lessons as well as private and group lessons at Dog Mountain Pet Resort. I also offer drop in visits / walks and will soon be offering in home boarding (for one family at a time) for dogs that don't do well in larger boarding facilities, younger puppies, and special needs dogs.

Brothers Reo and Rogue's owners put in the work to get their boys CGC. These are teams I'm extremely proud of! ๐๐ผ

The crew that started it all (minus APBT Cheetah)... each of these dogs taught me more than I ever taught them and they will forever be carried in my heart.

I have to say that despite training all breeds and sizes of dogs, I personally tend to be a big dog girl. However, I will admit that this little guy is really growing on me. He is confident and focused and sweet.

Ziggy is a super sweet ACD who just hasn't had a lot of socialization out of his comfy home environment. It has been a pleasure so far showing him that new environments, people, and dogs can be safe and even fun and I'm looking forward to seeing him again.

Uthred was found on the street in the middle of a storm. After doing everything they could to find his owners, he was adopted by an amazing family. Today, I got to see that he has some pretty great social skills with other dogs as well as confidence with body handling and environmental obstacles and noise but struggles with engagement and has possibly started to resource guard his owners. Working with him will be rewarding.

Service Dog in training Isla is a huge lab puppy with incredible engagement when distractions are minimal. Her handler and I will be working on building that engagement in the presence of distractions and getting her CGC, CGCA, and Urban CGC so that she will be ready for the program she will be going to next fall. Excited to work with this team!

Buddy is a sweet but nervous rescue who needs to work on pulling on leash and jumping. I was finally able to get him to trust me enough and be excited by me enough today to want to jump on me so we could start working on alternative ways to ask for attention.

Aggie Mae is an AMAZING rescue whose parents are putting in the work! Today we worked on extending her stay duration (and eventually distance), discussed starting to work her in more challenging environments, and practiced adding movement as a reset when she gets distracted. Love this girl!

Pit/lab/? mix Kobe came in for training and a daycare evaluation today and will be starting on Puppy group class on Sunday. I can see where he can use some confidence building but overall he is a sweet pup who impressed me today.

Socializing 5 mo lab Dolly with kids. Prior to this she had only had experience with teens. She's one of those dogs that instinctively understood that she had to be more calm around smaller children and followed their cues and took treats gently. Way to go Dolly!

Sometimes the best answer to help a nervous fearful dog is a friendly confident one. Honey came in last week for a daycare evaluation as she will be boarding at the facility next month and her mom wanted her to be able to experience it in shorter bursts before boarding. The evaluator was unable to do her evaluation because she was so scared and shut down. She needed to be carried to her suite after spending an hour with the evaluator in her office getting comfortable and she was curled up and shaking when she was checked on shortly after. Her mom came and picked her up with the recommendation that she contact me and we could work on some confidence building with Honey. While I frequently do this using basic agility, my gut told me that while Honey hadn't had much experience with other dogs, if I could show her a friendly confident dog who was enjoying being there at the very least it might get her moving. I was right. Not only did she make two new friends today, but she also walked up and down the hallways by herself, visited each different room, visited with different staff members and showed an exponential amount more confidence than last time. Her mom plans on sending her a few more times before boarding and they will slowly work her into larger play groups. Training isn't always about teaching something new but sometimes about changing the context to set a dog up for success. Can't wait to watch sweet Honey blossom even more!

And every time I work with toast, he makes me earn back his trust although it is taking a little less time each time. Teaching him to touch cue as consent for petting seems to be paying off and he has started actively soliciting pets with a nose boop.

Kempa is a perfect example of a dog who is not inherently fearful but rather lacks confidence due to a lack of structure and understanding of expectations. I enjoyed figuring her out today and I'm looking forward to working with her again in a few weeks

Therapy Dog candidate Harvey earned his CGC today. Congrats Harvey!

Oh my gosh, look at Bear. He's a 6 month old medium Goldendoodle who is getting off to the best start. I can't wait to see what his owners can accomplish with him by our next lesson. Today we talked about a marker system for effective communication, charging the marker, "watch" and "wait"

Mini Bernadoodle Harvey has Therapy Dog aspirations and will be taking the first step toward that on Sunday when he takes his CGC test. Today, we did a few mock runthroughs to see where he needed some fine tuning.

Bailey has had me in stitches. He's a smart boy who learns "tricks" quickly but gets overstimulated and can struggle with managing arousal once that happens. I've been working on slowing his brain down a bit and increasing his focus. Here he is in a halfway "play dead" because he just couldn't stop at "lay down" (although the halfway "play dead" was an improvement on the "roll over" which resulted every time I asked him to lay down at first.)

Rizzo was having to be nudged the last bit into the crate at home. Now, he's not only going on on cue but nudging the door open himself. Way to go Rizzo! I'm going to miss this silly boy.
Rowan is a super sweet lab, husky, hound mix who struggles with a bit of stranger danger. Today we worked some confidence building and also the very beginning of place so that he has a job to do when people enter his house.
Scratch board arrived and we got to work immediately. Gordon knows "paw" as a cue so we started with that. Mabel, because she is my working dog, was never taught to paw so I had to figure out a behavior she already knows and then free shape it. I started with paws up on the board held high and let her start sliding and marked and named it scratch. After watching Mabel do this a couple times, apparently Gordon caught on and took it upon himself to scratch.
Even at an event like a Doodle Romp, you can still work recall and manners. Notice I only used Ollie's name to recall him and not his recall word. The reason why is because his chance of failure in this high distraction environment would be high enough that I don't want to poison his recall word. So just used his name and my excitement and reinforced with food. I was pretty impressed by him today!
Zita is now walking all the way around the block! ๐๐ป I let her get out in front of me here so I could get some video of her gait for her upcoming vet appointment. #ivddrecovery #boxersofinstagram #spinalstrokedogs
For anyone interested in Zita's progress. This girl's recovery and attitude amaze me every time I see her! I tried to take her out on the street today with her boot on but now that her left leg is staying under her she's pushing off of it really hard and there's a slight twist of her foot as she does so the boot kept twisting around and I didn't feel comfortable taking her on concrete with her exposed quick so we just did more laps around her house on the grass and lots and lots of snuggles. ๐
First walk without the sling... Just to the end of the street and back but she's getting stronger and her brain and body are reforming connections! ๐พโฃ๏ธ
Murphy is making some big strides. Curiosity is starting to take place of fear and he's learning new cues. I've also very slowly been working on desensitizing him to nail trims and today was able to touch all of the nails on his two front paws with the clippers and even take a tip off of his dew claw without him pulling away. Definite baby steps but we're headed in the right direction.
Recall: recall does NOT mean that your dog comes NEAR you when you call them. It means that your dog comes TO you and offers their ATTENTION. Snoop was a rescue who's owner wanted him trained to be a service dog specifically given the task to wake her up and or prevent her from going outside in the middle of sleepwalking episode. She could undo locks, ignore alarms etc. so Snoop was really her last resort as far as ensuring her safety. Unfortunately, Snoop struggled with focus and so we started at square one with the absolute basics. Finally, after a week of daily training I was able to get a solid, consistent recall and attention. Because so many people see breeds like GSDs and Malinois online being hyper handler focused and flashy, they assume that it makes all of them quick to train. Unfortunately, this leads to some being given up on when they can't match that perceived pace.
