November is National Pet Cancer Awareness month, which means it is time to thank the veterinary staff who help diagnose and treat our pets, and to learn the signs of cancer in our pets and what we can do to help with prevention and early detection.

Here are some early signs of cancer in animals:

Lack of interest in things they previously enjoyed.
Lumps or bumps on their body.
Trouble eating, drinking, breathing, urinating, or defecating.
Swollen or firm stomach.
Unexplained bleeding, especially from the mouth or nose.
Wounds that don't heal quickly.

There are so many different kinds of cancer in pets that symptoms will vary based on the type of cancer. Early detection and prevention are two important ways for our pets to live longer. Spay and neuter your pets to prevent cancer of the reproductive organs. Avoid smoking near your pets. Keep them at a healthy weight and make sure they are seeing the vet for regular checkups. And while you are there, be sure to thank the veterinarians and all the staff for working so hard and helping our pets live as long and as healthy as possible!
