🐶🐱 Is your furry friend getting enough exercise? With more than half the pet population classified as overweight or obese, it's important to help your pet maintain their ideal body weight.

Your pet might feel nervous during their veterinary exam as all the poking and prodding might make them feel like they're under attack. These techniques help the vet gain valuable information about your furry friend's health.

From checking their heart, lungs, abdomen, eyes, ears, and mouth, it's essential to keep up with these regular exams. To help your pet feel more comfortable with being examined, practice examinations at home and pair them with plenty of treats and encouragement.

❤️ We all want our feline friends to be healthy and happy, but heartworm disease can be a major obstacle for cats. Unfortunately, no approved treatment exists for heartworm disease in cats, and management focuses on stabilizing the cat and closely monitoring their condition with frequent chest X-rays.

Steroids and antibiotics may be used to help address inflammation and infection, but the average survival time for heartworm-infected cats is only one and a half years. Stay vigilant and protect your cat's health by taking preventative measures!

Providing year-round heartworm prevention is an important part of your pet’s health care plan. If you would like to discuss the various preventives, contact our team at Aloha Vet Hospital by calling (714) 462-3360, so we can determine what protocol would best fit you and your pet’s lifestyle.

Teaching your dog to bark on command might seem like the opposite of what you want, but it can be a helpful step in training them to be quiet.

Let it out — First, find a stimulus that makes your dog bark naturally. It could be a knock on the door, a doorbell sound, or someone saying “Speak.” When your dog barks, reward them with praise and a treat.

Hold it in — Next, wait for a pause in the barking, say “Quiet” or another cue you choose, and offer a treat when your dog stops barking. Gradually increase the amount of time between barks before you give the “Quiet” cue.

Put it all together — Finally, practice the “Speak” and “Quiet” cues together until your dog can bark and then stop on command. This will give you more control over your dog’s barking and help them understand when it’s appropriate to bark and when they should be quiet.

Have you ever seen your cat chattering their teeth while staring intently at a bird or squirrel outside? This behavior might be more instinctual than we realize. Feline behavior specialists have noted the similarity between the teeth chattering noise and the neck bite that wild cats use to quickly kill their prey.

Kittens and cubs in the wild have the opportunity to practice this special bite, but house cats may show their excitement or frustration at seeing potential prey they can't get to. If you notice your cat's tail getting puffy or twitching in a particular way while they make these chattering noises, it's a sign they're getting excited.

🚹🐾 Neutering your male pet can help address several problem behaviors. Neutered pets are typically less aggressive, less likely to urine-mark their territory, and less likely to exhibit mounting behavior on people and other pets.

👍 Neutering also helps reduce the risk of certain health issues, and can prevent overpopulation.

🐾 Did you know that heartworms can grow up to 12 inches or longer inside a dog's heart and lungs?

😢 Several hundred worms can inhabit a single dog, causing inflammation and scarring in the vessels supplying lung tissue. Over time, this can lead to heart failure. Initially, most dogs don't exhibit any symptoms, but as their condition worsens, they may experience coughing, panting, exercise intolerance, weight loss, and fluid accumulation in the abdomen or chest. In severe cases, heartworm blockage can result in sudden death.

Providing year-round heartworm prevention is an important part of your pet’s health care plan. If you would like to discuss the various preventives, contact our team by calling , so we can determine what protocol would best fit you and your pet’s lifestyle.

🐾🥩🥦 When it comes to your pet's health, diet is everything. After evaluating your pet's body condition score, take a closer look at what they're eating.

Are they getting the right balance of high-quality ingredients like lean proteins, complex carbs, and healthy fats? Or do they indulge in a diet of sugary snacks and junk food? 🍫🍔🍟

🐶🐱 Even small treats can add up quickly and provide little to no nutritional value. It's important to take an honest look at your pet's diet and make adjustments if needed.

And don't worry, choosing the appropriate diet for your pet can be challenging, but we're here to help. Call (714) 462-3360 to talk to your veterinarian.

🐶🐱 Responsible pet ownership includes neutering your male pet.

🚫 Neutering prevents testicular tumors and decreases their risk for prostate problems, perianal tumors, and hernias.

👉 Plus, neutered males are less likely to roam and get into dangerous situations.

🐾🧠 Mental stimulation is important for pets of all ages, not just young ones. Encourage your adult pet to learn new tricks, solve food puzzles, and sniff out treats to keep their cognitive function strong well into their golden years.

😺🐶 As pets age, they can suffer from cognitive dysfunction, which is similar to Alzheimer's disease in humans. This can cause anxiety and stress if they forget familiar faces or the location of their food bowl.

👍💪 Keep your senior pet's mind sharp by providing plenty of enrichment activities. Call (714) 462-3360 to talk to your veterinarian about how to keep your furry friend happy and healthy.

🚺🚫 Spaying your female pet is an important part of responsible pet ownership.

💔 During a heat cycle, pets may be more vocal and bleed excessively, which can be distressing for both you and your furry friend.

👉 Spaying eliminates the heat cycle, and helps reduce the urge to roam.
