It’s breeding season for those fall babies! Pretty Boy has filled out so nicely. He’s staying short, but boy he’s thick! He’s given us some of the most amazing babies. He’s dun tipped so we’ve gotten a wide range of colors from him. If you want to add HighPark genetics to your fold we have heifer sexed and conventional straws available. PM us or you can text Brad at 660-247-5861

Here are all the “big” boys that are not so big. Missing GW and Maynard. I’ll have to get some pics of them to add in. They were in with the real big boys. My battery that I had charged all night anticipating using it the next day for snow pics died just after a few shots 😑 Apparently my charger is not working…I did get a few though before it died.

Would you like to see what I’m working on? Bloodlines 🧬 🧬🧬. Flora looks like a hot mess with her frozen 🥶 hair in this pic, but trust me she’s amazing!! She’s well under 42” and has Tatlayoko bloodlines 🔥 so this pairing with her and Ewan of Highland Heritage has me very excited!! 🤩 These babies are due any day now and I can not wait!!

A nice outcross to most black Highland cattle in the US, Ewan of Highland Heritage, was imported from Canada sired by Calum Seoladair Dubh 2nd of Killochries (D) (Scottish Import). The Killochries fold is known for gentle dispositions and Highland characteristics with exceptional horns and head conformation.

Here’s just a tad bit of history on Ewan (this is just a scratch on the surface): His lines go back to 1883 to the original Scottish herd books.

Some of his lines include: Uallach of Achnacloich, born in 1947 and legendary Supreme Champion who broke a 28 year old price record @ his sale in 1948 & whose influence is to be found in many important folds. In 1948 he was first in his class @ the Royal Highland Show in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Others in his lineage to win their classes at the Royal Highland Show were Capleadh 11th ILE, Lil-A-Glenn of Dounside in 1956, Laoch of Douneside 1957, and the infamous Narcisse Des Orcades was the Canadian Royal Champion bull 🐂.

This is just to name a few! We’re still digging and finding more and more cool 😎 things in his lineage.

Flora has several nice lines herself being a Canadian import to the US, with heavy Canadian and Scottish lines, including Jock 26th of Leys, he kinda got around during his time 🤪 Jock has sired champions in several countries and has been one of the most influential sires in the herdbooks of a number of these countries, including Australia.

One of a kind 🥰 heifer out of Ben Eniglair of Scone Palace (UK,D)

Here she is! These babies are not easy to make! The straws are from 1980’s, and as you can imagine are not the highest quality, so when we get a baby we celebrate!! 🎉 We have a few more due and one will stay on this farm! Last year we had, Naomi and she was definitely one of a kind. She was a short compact little yellow heifer with the sweetest personality!! We’re hoping this girl turns out the same.

Ben was a 100% Scottish Highland 🧬 bull imported in the early 1980s by Dan Flynn of Dirtane Farm. Sire of the 2011 National Western Grand Champion Bull and grandsire to the 2013 Grand Champion Bull and Reserve Grand Champion Female.

I’d love to hear your name suggestions for her! All of our registered girls we name with the years letter (N for 2024) and their dam (Cupcake 🧁) and for this rounds theme (football🏈). I feel like whoever gets this one will need a t-shirt or hat or something!! 🥰

As the year draws to a close 🎊, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on our journey and the milestones we've achieved. One remarkable accomplishment we haven't yet shared publicly is our significant role in establishing one of the first mini Highland and HighPark herds in South Korea 🇰🇷 🐮💕

This groundbreaking project began over two years ago, in November 2022, and we are thrilled to announce that, as of November 2024, we have successfully shipped 100 embryos to South Korea 🇰🇷 to kickstart their mini herds 🐮💕.

This initiative marks a historic first for the region, and we couldn't be more excited to contribute to this foundational endeavor, utilizing the exceptional genetics 🧬 of our Highland cows and mini bulls. Thanks to Brad’s expertise in project management, we executed this project seamlessly, crafting a nearly flawless schedule that ensured everything ran smoothly. The high-quality semen harvested from our bulls also played a crucial role in advancing this project without any hitches.

Our success in this venture came in two distinct rounds. In the first round, we utilized the straws from Pickle 🐮🥒 and Bruce, while in the second round, we incorporated OhYeah and Ino. Below, you’ll find some adorable pictures of calves from the embryos we used in our own herd, which we could not freeze, so we opted to implant them fresh into our surrogates. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and excited for what lies ahead!🎊💕🐮🎊

WILD-TYPE

Holy smokes!!💨

I totally went down a rabbit 🐰 hole 🕳️

There is always confusion around the wild-type results we receive when testing our animals, so I've been doing my research (even paying for a few research articles 😝).

Here it goes:

Coat colors in cattle are Black, Wild-Type & Red (Dominance in that order, although occasionally Wild-Type has been found to dominate black) Any other color is a modification of these colors.

Aurochs of Europe are the wild ancestor of most or all Bos Ta**us breeds. Aurochs were reddish brown to brownish black with a tan muzzle ring (keep this in mind for later, another rabbit hole I plan on diving down).

Wild-Type (E+) is often referred to as red, but that is not entirely true. E+ is the ability to have a blended mix of red and black pigments. So E+ animals can look very black or very brown or very red or somewhere in-between. (I have 2 examples of one extreme to the other in the pics).

Wild Type (E+) is dominant to red (e) and is considered neutral, so it’s not a “true” red because it can be controlled by other genes and allows both black and red at the same time.

Black (ED) instructs melanocytes to produce a TON of black pigment overwhelming most of the red pigment, but the red pigment is still produced in some parts of the coat. True red (e) inhibits the production of most if not ALL black pigment. This is how black animals can have tinges of red and red animals can have tinges of black.

Not all Wild-Type are brindle, but in order to be brindle there must be Wild-Type allele (E+). So a true red (e/e ) cow will not have brindle, nor will a cow carrying a single black gene (ED). Brindle is suppressed by both the black and red alleles. Brindle is a separate gene all on its own and does not necessarily mean that because the brindle allele is present, there's going to be brindling 😅 It gets deeper just try to follow along 🤪

In saying all of that, dilute brindles do occur. They can present as a yellow with dun stripes, (picture of Pickle as an example) or white stripes with silver (virtually impossible to detect), but could be an indication of why you may see a nose has grey in it, or stripes on the hooves. Could it be a dilution of the wild-type color or dilution of a brindle? 🤷‍♀️ The only way to truly know would be to test for brindle allele.

E+/ E+, E+/e, and e/e are all considered red in Highlands. So this combination will follow red on the heterozygous color chart.

Wild-Type should be thought of as its own color when looking at your own results, but when breeding and using the color chart you will use red. Just know that the calf that is produced could be different shades of red with black pigment depending on how much that gene is influenced by other alleles. So you could have black with tinges of red, brownish red, or red with tinges of black. If you add a dilution gene or 2 dilution genes to that you could have a yellow with tinges of dun or white with silver (you won’t be able to see this variation, but it may be present in the nose and hooves). The Wild-Type gene is what allows both colors to be present at the same time.

Ok, remember above I said to keep in mind the tan muzzle ring? Look at these two, both test genetically exactly the same but the variation in color is opposite. One has a tan muzzle ring, one has a red muzzle ring. Then just to be a PIA I threw in a Pickle baby with a white muzzle ring (I have not color tested him). How many think the white muzzle ring is a dilution of the tan muzzle ring and he’s also E+/E+ 🙋‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️ That’s for a future rabbit 🐰 hole 🕳️ deep dive when I catch the little dude and pull tail hairs…

Feel free to share picture with your own E+/E+ results…its so fascinating 🧐
