Hi, all. We have been getting a lot of messages about needing to reschedule due to the incoming storm. We have no problem rescheduling you and it will not count as your one time reschedule option. We are located on country roads that have hills and curbs, so please be aware of this. We were out tonight and they are pretty slick on some places. It does look like we will be experiencing some freezing rain during the day. We absolutely would rather you be safe than sorry. Send us a message through here or a text message and we will get you rescheduled as soon as possible.

Snow days were way better as a kid, but at least some of us didn’t mind it today.

Encounters should not be affected by weather tomorrow and will continue as planned. We will keep an eye on Sunday’s forecast, currently it looks like we will be getting a lot of snow and ice Sunday morning throughout the day. Hoping it misses us.

Due to snow drifts, ice on the backroads, and staff not able to make it in due to weather conditions, we have made the decision to cancel today’s encounters. We want everyone to stay safe. We will begin reaching out to everyone. We are happy to reschedule everyone at their earliest convenience. Stay warm and safe today. All encounters will resume tomorrow. Thank you for everyone’s patience and understanding.

Fern was absolutely not holding her sister under water.

We will continue to keep an eye on the storm system that looks like it will be moving in and hitting Ohio pretty hard on Sunday. If you have a scheduled encounter, please keep an eye out for us to update conditions on Sunday. We will reschedule you if severe weather occurs, please don’t risk your safety. We do live in the middle of nowhere with very narrow roads that are usually last to see snow plows, so please also take this into consideration.

It also looks like we may see some snow and ice tonight. Stay safe and warm everyone!

2 more hours! Dave has recently lost privileges to be around guests (sorry to the nice lady he called a bad name, we promise he did not pick up that word here), but no worries, he’s still getting plenty of attention behind the scenes and still spends most of his time in his new space when we don’t have visitors.

This is one of many reasons we only do encounters a few days a week, so that the needs of the animals are the priority and met

Annie did not want to look at the camera, she had too much fun smelling the props, but this definitely sums up her personality with zero attention span.

Want a New Year’s resolution? Make this the year to appreciate bats and the important role they play in the environment. With over 1400 different species of bats, it’s not hard to find something you like about them, from controlling insect populations that would destroy crops to being responsible for the agave plant (tequila). Here is a picture of our Egyptian Fruit Bats ready to ring in 2025.

Bringing some recognition for a lesser known animal, our four-eyed opossum. Enrique and others of his kind don’t really have four eyes, but when his eyes are shut, his adorable markings make him look like his eyes are wide open. This is a survival mechanism in the wild as it will trick predators into possibly avoiding them.

As we close out 2024, The Year of the Camelids, I wanted to take a minute to recognize these incredible animals that we get to call family. We learned so much from our vets, friends, mentors, and other camel owners. When I thought I couldn’t love our camels anymore than I already did, I formed even stronger bonds with them.

Cleopatra’s arrival will always stick with me, every single rib and her hip bones could be seen, and camels are meant to survive long periods of time without food and water, so you can imagine how long she went without adequate care. She has made an impressive comeback and has fit in perfectly with our boys.

Toby has made several trips to Ohio State University Veterinary Clinic and our local vets have seen him as well. We did X-rays, blood work, f***l checks, you name it. He was ultimately diagnosed with “big head syndrome” aka osteodystrophy. It occurs when an animal cannot properly absorb phosphorus or calcium. It can appear at any point, so it makes it more difficult to prevent when you haven’t had the animal for its whole life. There is no cure for it, but there are treatments and we can say that Toby has responded very well. We may need to go back to OSU to have more fibrous tissue removed, but for now he is eating well, loves the even more one on one attention he has been getting, and he’s acting like the same happy playful camel he was before we narrowed down the issue.

Gobi has transformed over the past year and has grown. He went from a tiny, sickly, malnourished, camel to the orneriest and the biggest diva in the bunch. I can’t believe how much he has changed in just a year.

Tucker remains so sweet and gentle. It’s amazing how careful he is. We obviously don’t allow anyone to be in the pasture with our camels, because they can become quite dangerous very quickly, but he’s one I don’t worry about myself with. We continue to make slow movements when around his head and are patient when it’s time to move him around. You can still tell someone was not kind to him in the past.

Throughout history and in present day, they have been referred to as the ships of the desert. Playing an essential and captivating role in the movement of goods and people, because of their abilities to survive the harshest of climates, I don’t believe they get enough credit. While they are mainly associated with Egypt and Asia, camels were also involved in The Civil War that took place right here in the states. Camels helped solve the issues of transportation and supplying military posts.
