🌎 Did you know that there have been significant changes to out-of-country travel requirements for pets? 🐾 Here's a quick summary of what you need to know to ensure your furry friend can join you on your next adventure:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced new regulations, effective August 1, 2024, for dogs entering or returning to the United States from any country, including Canada. These regulations are designed to limit the spread of rabies and protect the health and safety of pets and humans. Here's what you need to know:
Age: Your dog must be at least six months old to enter the U.S.
Microchip Requirement: Your dog needs an ISO-compatible microchip implanted before any rabies vaccination. If your pet was previously vaccinated without a microchip, they'll need to be revaccinated after the microchip is implanted. Ensure the microchip number is on all required forms and veterinary records.
Health Check: Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival; otherwise, they may need to be isolated, examined by a vet, and tested for diseases at your expense.
CDC Dog Import Form: Fill out the online form ideally 2-10 days before arrival. It will be released on July 15, 2024. If any details change before your trip, submit a new form with updated information. Include a clear photo of your dog's face and body, taken within 10 days of arrival if your dog is less than a year old.
Rabies Vaccination Documentation: Dogs must have current rabies vaccination and paperwork. All paperwork should be up-to-date and match your dog's microchip information. Records must be from a U.S.-accredited veterinarian.
Additional Paperwork: Specific requirements apply for dogs vaccinated outside the U.S. or those that have traveled to high-risk rabies countries within the last six months.
Plan ahead if you're traveling with your pet after August 1st, 2024, and consult with your veterinarian for assistance in meeting these updated ✈️🐕
