What is the Kitsap Medieval Faire?
The Kitsap Medieval Faire is public event sponsored by The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). This event displays our members/demonstrators research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat, culture, and employs this knowledge of history to enrich the lives of participants and guests alike through educational presentations and activities. You can find us on our website at http://www.kitsapmedievalfaire.org/
What is the SCA?
The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international non-profit volunteer educational organization. Members of the SCA study and take part in a variety of activities, including combat, archery, equestrian activities, costuming, cooking, metalwork, woodworking, music, dance, calligraphy, fiber arts, and much more. If it was done in the Middle Ages or Renaissance, odds are you’ll find someone in the SCA interested in recreating it. To learn more about the SCA visit us here: http://welcome.sca.org/
How is the Kitsap Medieval Faire different then a Renaissance and Fantasy Fair?
The SCA holds events worldwide and are different from Renaissance and Fantasy Fairs in a variety of ways. “Ren-Fairs” do some historical reenactment, but they’re main concern is providing an immersive stage show while selling wares to the crowds. It makes for a fun time and is very enjoyable, but historical accuracy isn’t often a top priority. You will frequently see actors portraying fantasy creatures at a Ren-Fair such as fairies and trolls as well as providing interactions with fairy tale characters.
Most Ren-Fairs are for-profit organizations that often comprised of paid entertainers and acting guilds while the SCA is a non-profit educational organization whose demonstrators, artisans, archers, armored fighters, axe throwers, and skilled bards are all volunteers.
Can I wear a costume?
Yes! We always encourage you to dress up! Though our demonstrators will be in clothing based on the time period and status that they represent, you are welcome to be anything from a princess to a pauper, a fairy to a pirate!
Will there be food and merchants?
Yes! Our food vendors and merchants are local Washington businesses. We recommend stopping by and supporting local wares! Alcohol is not served by our food vendors due to permit restrictions.
How can I participate (arts and science, combat, demonstrate, etc.) in future events?
It’s simple! Come play, learn and participate with us! Most local groups host a wide variety of activities throughout the month such as arts and sciences workshops, combat practices, feasts or weekend events. Once you find something that interest you, contact your local SCA branch’s Chatelain (Official Greeter) or Seneschal (Local Branch Manager). They will help introduce you to the populace, show you the ropes, and assist you with any rules (Example: Must be 16+ to join the adult combat practice). Then, go have fun! This society participants in a wide range of interests and loves to share their knowledge with people who want to learn.
What if I don’t know what I’m interested in?
If you are a newcomer with no prior historical enthusiasm DON’T WORRY! We'd be thrilled to help you find your niche and your place in history! You can even come join us on our newcomers night: http://www.kitsapmedievalfaire.org/newcomers-night.html
