Meet the Farmer!!! 🍒🐝💐🌞

Joseph Dutra is a first generation farmer that has come back to his home town of Brentwood after attending Chico State University and earning a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Plant and Soil Science. Back in 2021, while going to school, Joseph took over management for his grandparents Upick cherry farm here at Dejesus Ranch. After his graduation this past spring, Joseph moved back to Brentwood and is currently farming and managing a variety of crops from Brentwood all the way up to Yolo County.

Joseph’s passion for agriculture is like none other. He is always willing to answer any questions that anyone may have. Be sure to catch him this year at Dejesus Ranch to taste the beautiful cherries he has grown. Thank you Joseph for your work here at Dejesus Ranch!

We had an excellent holiday weekend with you all!🇺🇸 Just a head up we will be open this Tuesday from 9-3🕓 for all our weekday customers. Cover Cropping?! Here at Dejesus Ranch we have implemented the practice of planting a variety of plants in between our cherries for the past three years. Not only are they beautiful once they mature, but offer a lot of cool benefits to our environment. The seed selection we chose is aimed to sequester carbon and nitrogen out of the atmosphere, reduce soil compaction, conserve water and promote bee habitat during pollination. Stay tuned for more orchard and cover cropping updates.

Today we are out in the field injecting calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN-17) into our irrigation system. We call this hitting two birds with one stone. Not only are we giving the trees some help with their fruit sets but also combating boron toxicity, soil compaction, and nutrient uptake. The ammonium nitrate locks onto the calcium and is ready for immediate uptake for the tree, ensuring no nitrate leach into the soil and groundwater! Here at Dejesus Ranch, we are not only here to provide top notch cherries, but to also educate and be transparent about our farming practices!
