March 3 is World Wildlife Day. It is a United Nations International day to celebrate all the world's wild animals and plants and the contribution that they make to our lives and the health of the planet.

This date was chosen as it is the birthday of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed in 1973. This World Wildlife Day is also a celebration of CITES as it turns 50. In recognition of the work CITES does and the collaborative work for conservation that is going on globally, the theme for World Wildlife Day this year is 'Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation'...

Harrison's Bird Foods and Wild Wings Organic Wild Bird Foods support World Wildlife Day and most importantly, support wildlife in general as a fundamental concern.

Enjoy your day!

Some words about feeding the birds with organic foods from our friends Birding By Bus!

Sing the praises of eating organic! This Golden-crowned Sparrow is belting out its melancholy song that sounds to us like a descending “Oh, Dear Me”. Oh dear me is right…. when we think about what we and the birds are putting into our bodies when we eat. What is hiding in your food?

For example, the commonly used herbicide Roundup has been classified as a probable human carcinogen, the insecticide chlorpyrifos has been associated with developmental delays in infants, and pesticide residues are linked to ADHD in infants and reduced s***m quality in men. So why go organic?

*Organic produce has less pesticide and heavy metal residues.
*Organic food is often fresher.
*Organic farming is better for the environment.
*Organic food is GMO-free.

Wild Wings = 100% organic GMO-free seed for birds. Better for you, better for the birds, and better for the environment.

Wild Wings reaching some of most remote places on the planet!

Here’s Dr. Marc Kramer spreading organic gray millet at the famous “crab pots” on Saint Paul Island, Alaska. This remote and tiny island in the middle of the Bering Sea has no trees.

The large stacks of crab pots on the island are the closest thing to a forest — and lost or “vagrant” birds during migration will often use them for shelter. Some high quality bird seed is always a welcome life saver for hungry migrants!

From our friends at Birding by Bus!

Chickadees range throughout most of North America - you have probably spotted them in your own backyard! In the eastern U.S. we have Carolina Chickadees, Mountain Chickadees in the west, Mexican Chickadees in the south, Boreal Chickadees up north, and Black-capped Chickadees just about everywhere.

Chickadees are especially fond of organic black oil sunflower seeds, hulled sunflower seeds, and chopped peanuts. They are absolutely cute with their oversized head, rotund body, and a quickness and curiosity that makes them a favorite at feeders.

Which kind of Chickadee do you have in your yard?

From our friends at Birding By Bus!

Clinging to life? Birds benefit from our help — give them a boost! Feeding birds is one of the many ways we can help our feathered friends. Most birds don’t rely exclusively on supplemental feeding at backyard bird feeding stations, but will take full advantage of them if offered.

Like this Red-bellied Woodpecker extracting peanuts from a wire ring! They appreciate the extra calories of high-quality, high-energy, organic pesticide-free foods when offered to them. Make sure you keep your feeders very clean as North American birds are facing an outbreak of Avian Influenza this year. We recommend cleaning feeders at least once or twice monthly, scrubbed clean with soapy water followed by soaking for 10-15 minutes in a dilute bleach solution.

Birding By Bus

From our good friends at Birding By Bus...

Migration is happening all around us. Bird migration that is! In the spring, birds fly thousands of miles north from their wintering grounds to their breeding grounds. There are hazards during this migration time that they must avoid in order to survive the arduous journey. What can you do to help? Five things that can make a big difference to migrating birds:

Create nature friendly native habitat in your yard.
Apply window strike deterrent stickers at home (so birds don’t crash into glass).
Turn outside lights off at night during migration (bright lights force birds off course or make it more likely that they’ll collide with a building).
Keep cats indoors.
Put up a bird feeder. Start with just one and keep it clean.
