I have been a bit MIA on this page lately, but it’s for a good reason! My family expanded, and I got an English Cocker Spaniel puppy so I have been busy training, loving, and preparing this pup for life ❣️
Check out this video of Miss Pigeon showcasing her loose leash walking skills during her group class. I am so excited to see where this pup goes in life.
On the training side: We currently have a group basic obedience class beginning on Tuesday September 17th that still has a couple spots left!
I am also open for private lessons beginning the third week of September! Come to us for all your pet’s needs 🐾🐶🐾
🐾Bailey is back! She is continuing her work on impulse controls with jumping as well as now practicing around doorways and food using the “leave it” command! She is perfecting her “sits” and “downs” as well as her “stay” command.
She is a perfect little girl 💙🩵💙🩵💙

Day 26- Doorbell/knocking desensitization
Does your dog bark and go crazy when someone knocks or rings the doorbell? Today is the day to work on it! Practice pairing the sound with an alternative behavior such as the place command. This way you know exactly where your pup is while you handle whoever is at the door!

Day 23- Teaching Middle
The middle command is a command we use to teach our dogs to go in between our legs. What is it good for? Well, it can be just for fun, or you can use it as another emergency position for your dog. Maybe an off leash dog is coming charging at you and you want to protect your dog, or maybe you’re in a very busy vet office and need your dog to be out of the way from other rambunctious pets.
To teach middle, we will lure then into position with a high value reward they love. Firstly figure out if you want them to enter your legs from behind, or from the front. Then say your middle command, and lure them how you want them to perform the command. Once their in position, say YES and reward. Then release them from the position and do it again!
Check out the video below of how I use the middle command along with some others to sequence a fun session with my pup.

Day 19- Advanced Leave It
Let’s test our dogs “Leave it” command.
Toss a treat for your dog to follow, as they’re following it- say leave it! Then toss a bunch of treats to really test them!! Ask for them to walk through all of the treats and perform a command.
The leave it command is a life saving command! What if while you were baking you dropped a bunch of chocolate chips? Or while you were out walking someone dropped a tasty chicken bone? This is why we practice it to this extent.

Day 18- Off Switch during play
Todays challenge is to work on your dogs “off” switch during play. An off switch is a way for us to bring our dogs arousal level down when previously in a heightened state. For example when wrestling or playing tug or fetch with our dogs, it’s important that we have a way to bring them back to a calm mind in order to prevent them from reaching over arousal. This is also a good way to work on your pups impulse control!

Day 12-Long Line decompression walk
Take your pups up on a nice relaxing calm sniffy walk! Put them on a long line(I like 25 ft) and go to a big open field. A decompression walk is a relaxing walk where the dog gets to decide where they go, what they sniff, etc. There isn’t too much training being done but it gives them a chance to run, sniff, play and be a dog!

Day 10-Passive “Place” Training
Stormy days call for some indoor training ☔️
Practice your pups “place” command while you do tasks around the house! My favorite is vacuuming and mopping the floors while my dog stays out of the way, on place 🐕

Day 9-Enrichment feeders!
Let’s give our pups some fun enrichment today, use a puzzle toy or treat dispensing toy to give our dogs a little challenge and use their brain to get them out. If you don’t have any enrichment toys or puzzle toys- no worries! Use an use blanket and sprinkle some treats in it and tie it up, or even if you have some old cardboard laying around and don’t mind cleaning up a mess, sprinkle some treats inside and let your pup tear it apart(supervise to make sure they aren’t eating the little bits)

Day 8- Loose Leash Walking Skills
Does your dog pull on the leash? Todays the day to start working on it! Grab some yummy treats, find a nice quiet area outside, put your pup on a 6 ft leash and get to work
Ask for some focus from your dog, reward for any and all eye contact and attention to you, anytime there is tension on that leash- do a complete 180° turn and bring their attention back to you. If your dog is doing amazing, challenge them but teaching and automatic sit when you stop walking.
I typically end these sessions after 15 minutes and always on a good note 🦮

Day 6- Nail Trim Day!!
It’s so important for us to take time getting our dogs being comfortable during nail trims. When a dogs nails get too long this can harm the way the stand and harm the structure of their body and the way they grow- which is super painful for them!
Getting our pups used to nail trims is a slow but so important process. Take it slow and at your dogs pace. Begin simply just touching, then rewarding. Then showing them the clippers and rewarding. Then putting the clippers to their paws and rewarding. I reccomend working on this every single day!! Even if you can only clip one nail a day, by the end of that process it will be time to do them again. Always take it slow and make it a fun and postive experience for your pup 🐶
