Just a couple of our resident tooth fairies doing their thing! 🦷🧚

🔸Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis, also known as EOTRH, is a syndrome in horses that results in resorptive lesions of the incisors and sometimes canine teeth. A veterinarian can diagnose EOTRH with radiographs of the incisors.

🔸The only treatment for EOTRH is to extract the affected teeth. There is no known way to prevent EOTRH, but maintaining good dental hygiene and regular dental checkups can help detect the disease early.

IT’S VET TECH APPRECIATION WEEK! 🎉

Our technicians work incredibly hard through all seasons to support our doctors! They often have long days spent carrying heavy equipment, soothing anxious horses, protecting their doctor from potential injuries, and keeping track of appointments, bills, and inventory.

Be sure to thank them for all they do at their next visit!

Not all pictured but all equally appreciated:

A dynamic endoscope is a diagnostic tool that allows veterinarians to evaluate a horse’s upper airway while the horse is exercising. Many upper airway conditions cannot be diagnosed while a horse is at rest therefore it may be necessary to evaluate the horse’s airway function while in motion. 🐎

The endoscope’s camera transmits a video to the veterinarian in real time, allowing them to observe the horse’s upper airway during exercise. There are several conditions that are readily diagnosed with this technology! 👩🏼‍💻

Common complaints that may require a veterinarian perform this type evaluation include poor performance, coughing, abnormal respiratory noises as well as behavioral issues such as head shaking. 🤧

Fall Health Reminder! 🍁🐴🍎

🗓️ As we transition into the fall season, it’s crucial to prioritize seasonal preventative health appointments!

☑️ This time of year is ideal for your veterinarian to conduct a physical examination, assessing your horse’s body condition, dental health, and requirements for vaccinations and deworming.

Please join us in welcoming our newest associate, Dr. Shannon Finnegan! Shannon will primarily work out of our Westchester location and will join the Wellington team for the winter!

Dr. Shannon Finnegan hails from Ontario, Canada where she grew up training young event horses. Prior to attending veterinary school, she groomed for a prominent Canadian 3-day event rider and competed up to the 2* level. She also spent time working in the equine research industry, conducting nutrition and exercise physiology trials.

Shannon graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2023, and then completed a yearlong rotating internship at Moore Equine Veterinary Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Her veterinary special interests include lameness, emergency medicine, and internal medicine. When she’s not working, she can be found hiking, golfing, and spending time with family and friends.

Have you noticed any early signs of PPID in your horse, but have yet to get them tested?

We have the opportunity to enroll a limited number of horses in a testing program that completely covers the cost of the blood test. Participating horses must not have been previously diagnosed, and should not currently be on medication for PPID.

Early signs of PPID may include:
✅Delayed shedding
✅Increased drinking or urination
✅Abnormal sweating
✅Decreased energy
✅Recurrent infections

If you are currently a client and are interested, please reach out to the doctor that cares for your horse! 🐴 Enrollment for this program is open through October 22nd.

With each passing year, horses are living longer lives and many survive easily to 25 years of age or older. While this is good news, it also means that we need to be aware of changes that can occur with age in order to preserve the health and quality of life of our equine friends.

For example, Equine Cushing’s disease is one of the most common diseases of horses 15 years of age or older. This syndrome is better defined as Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) because it reflects the location within the brain that is abnormal. Clinical signs are associated with abnormally elevated hormone concentrations in the blood.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is another endocrine disorder that can affect mature horses and shares some of the same clinical signs as PPID. Although the two disorders feature some striking clinical similarities — most notably a predisposition to development of chronic laminitis — the underlying disease biology is quite different in each case. Successful management relies on proper diagnosis by your equine veterinarian first.

Our understanding of both conditions, especially EMS, is incomplete and evolving, but sufficient information is currently available to highlight some important similarities and differences for the interested horse owner. Consult your veterinarian for more information and work with them to develop the best wellness practices to ensure a healthy life for your mature horse.
