On this, the 23rd Anniversary September 11th 2001, off the Eastern coastline of Africa, 22 hours from crossing the equator, headed toward Cape Town, South Africa; our final port of call before returning home. Little did we know of the horrific events about to unfold back home. It was a day just like any other in recent months, when the CO came across the ship's 1MC and directed the entire crew to find a TV. This was in no uncertain terms bad news, an event that sent us into communications blackouts unable to communicate to our loved ones. The ship immediately altered course and returned to the Persian Gulf were we remained silently on station until the order was given in early October to strike targets in Afghanistan with Tomahawk missiles. The first retaliatory response to an event that peaked the collective conscious of the world to levels never before achieved, banded countries together as one, and ultimately sparked a chain events that continue to unravel even today. 9/11 We Will Never Forget
