National Check the Chip Day, observed annually on August 15, reminds pet owners about the importance of microchipping your pets and ensuring that the microchip registration information is up to date.

An estimated 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the United States every year. In a study published by the Journal of the AVMA, research revealed that only 22 percent of lost dogs entering shelters were returned to their families, but that percentage rose to more than 52 percent when a dog was microchipped.

Even better results were attained in the feline population. One in 50 cats in animal shelters were returned to their owners, but when microchipped nearly two out of five cats were reunited with their families, the study stated.

Owners can contact their veterinarian for registration information or go to https://www.petmicrochiplookup.org and access the Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool provided by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). The tool allows users to enter a microchip code and directs them to participating microchip registries associated with that microchip’s number and manufacturer. All registries should be updated as needed.

If your furry friend is not microchipped, contact us so we can help! We will implant the chip and your first year of enrollment is included!

If you are unsure if your pet is microchipped, you are more than welcome to bring them in, and we can scan them to see if they have a microchip (there is NO fee associated with this!)

Animal hospitals around the world earn AAHA accreditation to strengthen their business, advance their team, and provide the best possible care to companion animals.

Please join us in welcoming Jenny to the Adamston Team! Jenny is our new veterinary assistant here at Adamston.

From Jenny:

I used to think loving animals was, just loving animals. As I’ve seen over the years with my pup Chanel and my cat Sebastian, I’ve realized I want to do more for them and help other pet owners in any way that I can. I want to help as many fur-babies as I can ❤️.

Man’s best friends are called so because of their loyalty and dedication toward their owners. Service dogs take that dedication even further, helping people with disabilities navigate their everyday lives. International Assistance Dog Week, celebrated from August 4 to August 7 this year, is meant to honor service dogs and their trainers. Together, they have improved countless lives across the globe.

Check out these 2 extraordinary service dogs!

1. John Hopkins University awarded a golden retriever named "Kirsch" an honorary master's degree after he attended all the classes with his owner.

2. A German Shepherd named Orient, helped his blind owner complete the Appalachian Trail, which is 2,100 miles long! In addition to this amazing achievement, Orient was featured in two books: “Blind Courage,” and “Orient: Hero Dog Guide of the Appalachian Trail,” a children’s book.

Can you spot the puppies on these x-rays?

With people to confirm pregnancy we do an ultrasound; with cats and dogs we take x-rays. In these x-rays we can see/count skulls and spines. Doing this gives us an estimate on how many puppies the mother may have.

This is a case that has a piece of every team member's heart here at Adamston!

Gidget (a french bulldog) came in to be spayed, upon examining her pre-operatively, she was showing signs that she may be pregnant. We called Gidget's mom, and she stated that Gidget was around an intact male dog (chihuahua). Once x-rays were done, we broke the news to Gidget's mom that she is going to be a grandma!

Viewing the x-rays, we estimated there to be about 7 puppies. With Gidget being a French Bulldog, a C-Section was recommended since French Bulldogs have a narrow birth canal due to the breed's anatomy. We scheduled the procedure to be done and the morning before Gidget's mom called and said she gave birth overnight to 10, YES 10 babies with no complications! Gidget's mom brought Gidget and the babies in to check and make sure that mom was okay and that babies did not have any abnormalities such as a cleft palate. Gidget had 8 boys and 2 girls, unfortunately 1 boy did not make it, but the other puppies are thriving! The picture on the left are the puppies at less than 24 hours old, the photo on the right are the puppies at 4 weeks old to get weighed and examined by Dr. Vourlos.

Fun Frenchie Fact: >80% of french bulldogs need a c-section to deliver babies safely for both mom and babies!

Did you know female dogs can also show pregnancy symptoms resulting in a diagnosis of pseudocyesis which means false pregnancy.
