Downtown Halsell Street in Bridgeport Added to National Register of Historic Places Historic designation paves the way for preservation efforts, tourism growth, and business development.
Bridgeport, TX – The City of Bridgeport is proud to announce that a portion of the downtown historic district has officially been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This prestigious designation recognizes Halsell Street’s historical and architectural significance, marking a milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to preserve its rich heritage and foster community revitalization.
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) reviewed and approved the historic significance of Halsell Street and set the proposed district boundaries. These recommendations were then submitted to the National Park Service, which provided final approval and officially added the district to the National Register. This designation affirms the importance of the street as a cultural and architectural treasure, and it provides new opportunities for preservation and development.
The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation due to their historical, cultural, or architectural significance. Being added to the Register helps ensure that these valuable resources are safeguarded for future generations and enhances their visibility in heritage tourism efforts.
“This is a monumental achievement for our city, and we couldn’t be more excited to see Halsell Street receive the recognition it deserves, ” said Krystal Smith, Main Street Manager for Bridgeport.
“This designation is not only a testament to the rich history of our community but
also an exciting opportunity to further promote tourism, attract visitors, and support local businesses in the heart of downtown. The National Register opens up avenues for grants, tax credits, and other incentives that will allow us to maintain the street’s historic charm while bringing new vitality to the area.
”Leah Clark, Executive Director of the Bridgeport Economic Development Corporation, also expressed her enthusiasm about the impact the designation will have on the local economy:
“This is a huge win for Bridgeport. Adding the Bridgeport Commercial Historic District to the National Register not only highlights the unique character of our downtown district but alsopositions us for significant economic growth. The historic tax credits and preservation incentives available to property owners within the designation will help attract investment, encourage
reinvestment in our local businesses, and boost job creation without posing any burdens on the property owners. It’s an exciting time for Bridgeport, and this designation will play a key role in shaping the future of our community. This application process would not have been possible without the great record keeping of the Bridgeport Historical Society and the knowledgeable staff at Post Oak Preservation Solutions.
”
The addition of the Bridgeport Commercial Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places enhances the city’s ongoing preservation efforts in downtown Bridgeport. In addition to its impact on tourism, property owners of buildings with contributing status in the district are now
eligible for tax credits and grants. Bridgeport’s vibrant downtown area, including the recently designated portion of Halsell Street, is poised to become a key attraction for heritage tourism, drawing visitors to explore its unique blend of historic architecture and local culture.
