BIRD FLU IN CATS - Several cats (including indoor cats) all over the country have contracted the avian influenza recently. Cats appear to be very susceptible to severe illness, often resulting in death. The good news is that infection can be prevented with a few simple measures.

It is important to:
NOT feed your cat unpasteurized milk, colostrum or raw or undercooked meat
Keep cats away from livestock and poultry
Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and other wildlife yourself
Thoroughly wash your hands after handling your cat and after any encounters with poultry, livestock, wild birds and other animals
Change your clothes and shoes, and thoroughly wash any exposed skin after interacting with sick or dead animals that may harbor the avian flu virus, and before interacting with your cat
Immediately contact us if you see any signs of bird flu or if you think your cat may have been exposed

Signs to look for include:
Neurologic signs (clumsy movements, circling, tremors, seizures, blindness)
Severe depression
Discharge from eyes and nose
Respiratory signs (rapid breathing, shortness of breath, coughing or sneezing)

UPDATE ON LIBRELA - Our doctors have read the FDA update on the osteoarthritis medication Librela. Every medicine has possible side effects, usually the benefits outweigh the risks. Librela has undergone robust testing and has been approved as safe and effective for controlling osteoarthritis pain in dogs. In our hospital we have seen some great results with patients who are on Librela: it provides relief for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis pain.

Every dog is different, and yours may or may not be an ideal candidate for Librela. Our veterinarians can help you come up with a treatment plan that best suits your dog. We always weigh pros and cons with you when we discuss any new therapies to determine the best care for your pet. We currently offer Librela, as well as a wide range of other options for the treatment of arthritis, such as Dasuquin Advanced, fish oils, Adequan, cold laser therapy, prescription diets and other alternative medications.
