Our Story

WHO IS AGWAY?

Agway made it's appearance in Beaver County in 1987 when Chet and Sherry Whelpley purchased the business and property on Sharon Rd., known at the time as Farm Bureau/True Value Hardware.

The Whelpley's two sons,Chad and Curt, were just 10 and 7 years old at the time. Chet grew up on a dairy farm in central PA, got his Ag Business Management degree from Penn State in 1973 and began his career in agriculture related retail.

He managed retail farm stores in Morgantown, WV; Middletown, MD; Punxsutawney, PA; and Indiana,PA; then, served as an Area Manager for Agway until the purchase of the Beaver store.

It became quite clear early on that the store the Whelpley's purchased in '87 was best known by the general public as The "Co-Op" .

The "Co-Op" was formed in 1922 and served customers for over 60 years. It has been an honor to continue the tradition of knowledgeable, friendly customer service to the people of Beaver County.

Since 1990, the Whelpley's have continued service to New Castle, Butler, Eighty Four, and Imperial, where Agway stores were already established and, in 2013, opened an entirely new store in Ohio Township, Sewickley, known as Mt. Nebo Agway.

This store is managed by Curt Whelpley, and Chad Whelpley is managing Beaver as Chet continues to supervise all six.

WHAT IS AN AGWAY STORE?

AGWAY dealer locations carry lawn and garden, wild and caged bird seeds and feeders, bird supplies, pet products and farm supplies.

So then, what is an AGWAY store? Is it a Farm store, a Lawan and Garden, a Nursery, a Pet or a Wild Bird store? The answer is "YES".

An AGWAY store is what that location owner feels is suitable for their market. From the thousands of products AGWAY has available, each store management team will choose the ones they feel are the best to serve their market needs.

So... if you are in an AGWAY store in upstate New York or Pennsylvania, it may be a country feed store with everything you need to run a farm.

If you are in an AGWAY store in Cape Cod or Connecticut it may be a charming lawn and garden, pet and bird supply store, and you'll find what ever you need to make your home and yard attractive and inviting.
