It all comes down to this: If itโ€™s important to you that your dog understands both what *to* do and what *not* to do, then you can't ignore the balance between reinforcement and punishment."

Would you have gotten upset with the adult dog here? I get a lot of inquiries on what people should do with their adult dog when they start growling at the new puppy for touching their things! I always tell people it isn't your adult dogs job to raise your pup or to just give in & give everything to the pup... That most likely won't make for a fun adult dog! (Obviously there are extremes to everything) But for the most part average people tend to correct the wrong dog/behavior ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•
** I want to add an edit that I wouldn't have done anything. I simply shared bc a lot of people reach out about situations like this. But the correction on the giving & receiving end was beautiful. Had that pup not got the message or kept trying I for sure would step in ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜‰

Remember if you don't feel like getting up off the couch today or you're just not feeling it, all too soon there will come a day when they don't get off the couch or they are just not feeling it! Make the days count, the days turn into years in the blink of an eye! We want their companionship, minimally we should give the same in return! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

our first little hike! I think at this point I decided Frodo wasn't going anywhere. With Remi, Jamie said "how could we take this all away from him after everything?!" It was that night that I feel asleep knowing we owned another dog, plus who was I to say no to him wanting to add to our "chaos" ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜… Well I think it was watching Frodo absolutely blossom with a proper lifestyle, I'm not saying he was an over night fix but goodness meeting his bare minimum needs, he became the most content dog! ๐Ÿ’

This soggy wet crew is wishing you a happy weekend & hoping you had a great rainy Friday!!

I love getting to spend time with dogs that I have previously trained! Rosie & Sherman are always signed up for "continued education!" So we get to "tune" them up & spend extra time doing dog stuff with them.
If you watch my stories you can see how seamlessly all the dogs interact together. That isn't by luck ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

I sat down for a minute & started scrolling (photos).
I had to share (possibly re-share) this pic. I love this photo & I love the bond they have. To see Roxy become the dog she has become is incredible. To see her help me help a once troubled dog who now helps me help so many dogs is truly something special! Rip is my go-to dog for reactive, uneasy, nervous, too playful you name it! So amazing when we take what they have an bring them to their fullest potential, we still have a ways to go but we have come so far ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜„

Also this photo just screams summertime & I need that right now!! ๐Ÿซถโ˜€๏ธ

Yesterday we went to the vet, Ryder has had aspiration pneumonia on & off since June. We have been able to learn signs & symptoms to catch it early to start treatment. I'm fact last time I watched her aspirate right in front of me ๐Ÿฅฒ, catching it early means we can use meds for a shorter course. The last few times it didn't seem like the med that had helped was but thankfully we had been using two, so each time one or the other seemed to get her "better" !! I took her in bc she has also had an idiopathic (?) gag that has increased recently. But not followed with the typical aspiration symptoms. So her Dr. Listened to her lungs, which at this time are thankfully clear! She did show her doc the gag while we were there. We have decided to take her off galliprant (which seemed to reduce it originally) and we are going to put her on Prednisone. I have such a love/here for pred. But the most important thing is keeping Ryder comfortable (obvi!) but I'm sharing all this to also say that the other day I was thinking about her & where she would be without . I honestly don't think she would have seen the age of 11.3 years. Sure I could have soaked kibble to make it easier for her to swallow, for everyone who wants to argue that there are other soft food options. But here's the difference she isn't consuming a diet that provokes inflammation in her body. She eats a biologically appropriate, balanced, natural diet that works to combat inflammation & stress to her body!

Of course I can't & don't ignore the fact that a veterinarian who cares for her & modern medicine has their hand in her being alive ... She would not be here if antibiotics didn't exist! I am grateful for that as well.

I am simply saying that I am not then confident that modern medicine wouldn't have had a chance to help her if she hadn't been on such a systemically supportive diet for all these years. Poor genetics have stacked a lot against her over the years, for all that she battles she lives a very good life! Love, car & a healthy foundation (starting in the gut) gets the credit for that! Before we left her Dr said "she's 11 do you know that?!" I laugh & Said of course I do ๐Ÿซถ

Hey all Daisy & I checking in! ๐ŸŒผ

She's doing very well. Loves her , I was able to get her a smaller version of Ryder's bed at the outlet (for her regular kennel). I had to take this pic of her in the car kennel just waiting for me to get her to take her for a walk!! The biggest complaint when Daisy was surrendered is that she was resisting being kenneled. I believe that it was a big issue. I believe that she prob would have eventually escalated to seeing if her teeth would stop the kenneling! I made it very clear she had to be kenneled BUT I also made the kennel worth it. I did very little to specifically address the kennel. I met her needs, I have shown her that "true love" that I am always talking about!

The love where you care for them, but also set clear rules & boundaries. Where we have expectations but also meet needs! Daisy was displaying the behaviors she was displaying in her home of 4 years because she couldn't take it anymore. She has needs that she can't meet by herself. I am also always saying, give your dogs what they need or deal with what they give you. Unfortunately this is what happens they can't take it anymore & then the human "can't take it anymore" so they give the dog away or sometimes it costs the dog their life!

If you don't want a dog that NEEDS exercise, exploration & mental enrichment then you better get a breed that can comfortably get by like that. But to ask a dog with physical & mental needs to survive without that is just wrong! Don't do it.

Daisy still needs training for me to feel like she is her best self to be rehomed. But Daisy is already such a better version of herself! ๐Ÿซถ

Sometimes as humans we don't do things to our dogs because we feel avoiding "discomfort" would make them happy but we fail to realize that happiness is a balanced life with clarity. Not being able to kennel cost Daisy her home... What's more uncomfortable kenneling your dog or getting rid of it? Do you see what I'm getting at?... Now she has to spend most of her day kenneled BUT she is a happier dog because she gets the things that make HER "happy" ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

Happy Monday โ˜บ๏ธ

Starting this week off with a "thank you" ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿซถ

When I look back at pictures I've taken & I see healthy, strong dogs I am grateful!

you have given me peace of mind when it comes to feeding my dogs a nutrient dense, biologically appropriate diet!!

Roxanne is a pittie, boxer with a bunch of other things tossed in there. She is 6 years old & has been on for over 3 years (ndf2 to start, now rescue.)

I made the decision to put her on Rescue bc I want to do everything I can to keep inflammation down in her body. Her breeds alone make her more prone to cancers, esp
I wanted to def have her switched at age 6 but just over a year ago she had a MCT removed (low grade & removal was curative!) I switched her from NDF2 to Rescue right after surgery!

To see her look so strong & muscular, to have a truly shiny coat. To have once been a very short coated pittie whose fur was so short & pokey (it drove me nuts!) to now her body is receiving nothing but good that her literal fur has grown in length & depend in color ๐Ÿงก

For a lot of people they don't see "damage" until it shows itself outwardly! Meaning your dogs gut is in distress long before you see the head shaking & paw chewing. My point is if she is this healthy & strong on the outside I take comfort in knowing she is healthy & strong on the inside too. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

Roxanne is also 4 years post bi-lateral FHO, meaning she has no femoral heads. She had severe hip dysplasia! That makes all her progress & muscling even more impressive ๐Ÿ’ช

So thank you for helping me keep my bestie, her best!

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually Iโ€™ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
Iโ€™m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.
