Got parasites?

We now have FAMACHA cards available for purchase! The FAMACHA scoring system is a method used to determine how anemic an animal is, and uses this information to make decisions on whether to deworm. We recommend evaluating the FAMACHA score of your sheep, goats, llamas, and alpacas throughout the grazing season to stay on top of parasites.

If you would like a FAMACHA card, call the office to schedule a training with your veterinarian!

Parasite resistance to dewormers is common, and effective alternative options are exciting! Copper Oxide Wire Particles (COWP) have been around for 20 years and have been found to be a safe and effective way to help control stomach worms in sheep and goats. Depending on the parasite burden, regular dewormers may still be required, and owners need to be cautious administering copper to not cause toxicity, particularly in sheep. Talk to your veterinarian if you have any questions about trying COWP in your herd or flock.

Happy Friday!! Lambing and kidding season is wrapping up and grazing season is just around the corner. We recommend CD/T (tetanus) and Rabies vaccines for all small ruminants. Now’s a good time to make sure everyone is up to date before they get outside on pasture.
