Jim and I had so much fun at the Patriots/Broncos game tonight. Such an exciting game and the Pats won in the last 7 seconds! But it was cold. Go Pats! The cheerleaders even came out in Reindeer costumes. 🏈

Cats don’t drink the same way we do and drink differently from dogs—they create a column of water and quickly close their mouths to take in the water. See my reel on 10/21 for more on the interesting way they drink!

Leopards and Jaguars look very similar. The first photo is a jaguar, the second a leopard, the 3rd and 4th are jaguars and the last one is a leopard. I took the jaguar photos in the Pantanal in Brazil and the leopard photographs in Zambia in Africa; both times on trips with Natural Habitat Adventures.

The birds in the Pantanal are amazing and I could easily post 30 days of just bird photos! Although the black-collared hawk is a fishing specialist, the feathers aren’t waterproof like those of some other fishing birds, such as the osprey. Their toes have spikes on the bottom to help them hold onto the fish they capture.

This jaguar had likely seen a caiman (related to the alligator, but smaller) in the water, which they often eat. They are opportunistic hunters however and will hunt any animal they can.

Pampas deer usually feed during the day, though occasionally they will feed at night. They usually live in small groups of 2-6 deer, and males drift between the groups. Females with fawns will fake a limp to distract a predator! This Dawn is clearly enjoying the protection of the buck.

The cocoi heron is the largest South American heron. The heron feeds in shallow water, by standing and slowly walking between the standing sites. He or she uses head titling for better vision, usually feeding alone but will join other birds when prey is abundant and sometimes gets away with stealing from those other birds!

Yellow-billed cardinals are native to South America (Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.) interestingly they have also been introduced in Hawaii on the Big Island and that population is believed to be the result of released or escaped caged birds.

The Jabiru stork is one of the largest birds in the New World and the tallest flying bird in South America, reaching about 5 ft tall. They are monogamous (though evidently, not always faithful!) and raising their chicks is so much work —they stay with them for 6 months—that most couples only have chicks every other year.

The adult Black-Crowned night herons look quite different than the juveniles—with a totally white breast and black and gray back. At about one month, chicks leave the nest but they still can’t fly for a couple more weeks and during this time they get around on foot.

Amazon kingfishers are large kingfishers and don’t migrate. They have great eyesight—able to see colors and compensate for the water’s reflection and refraction (kind of like polarizing sunglasses!), which helps them find prey.

Learned so much at the Mountain Lion co-existence camp-out this past weekend at beautiful Fortunate Farm in the Mendocino area in CA. And yes, I realize this this not a mountain Lion, but rather a baby lamb, an example at the farm, an example of animals we are learning to protect!
