Let's take a moment to talk cat intros and why we do not recommend letting your cats "fight it out"🐈

People have asked: "Has there been introductions you have worked that that even you couldn't integrate?" The answer - YES! Even though we are behavior professionals, that does not mean we have the abilities to make every situation work. In cases that don't integrate we do not see this as a failure, but as a trying effort to do everything we possibly could to make it happen.

Lets start here:
Why do some cats get along well and some not at all?
Why do some integrate quickly and others seem to take forever?
Why can some be successful with "the feed on either side of the door" method - but others cant?
Why sometimes does it not work out?

Cats are a beautifully complex species. They thrive on maintaining a safe, well enriched and balanced environment with predictability in their routine. What happens when a new cat comes along? Well, it shuffles the cards - the cat then begins asking the questions:
Who are you?
Why are you here?
What happens next?
Are my resources safe?
Am I SAFE?

Understand that the newcomer too is asking:
Where am I?
Who are you (other cat)?
Where are the resources?
What happens next?
Am I SAFE?

The structure of an introduction is crucial for the cat to ask these questions and get their answers via their interactions. Your strategic set up and supervised time together is to help them with building this relationship from the ground up. Too often the process is rushed and cats hissing at the door are left to engage in conflict as a means of "figuring it out."

While some share that after an initial rough patch that their cats found balance together, others have seen the other side that "figuring it out" resulted in:
-serious injuries to one another (requiring stitches or more)
-injuries to humans (redirected or when splitting up fight)
-redirected behaviors to other pets in the home
-long term stress resulting in illness
-cats wanting to go outside/reluctance to come back
-house soiling OR spraying (causing extensive house damage)
-complete shut down/change in a cat(s) personality
(not eating, not grooming, hiding)

If you are saying WOW, we say these things NOT to scare you but to share that we have seen all of the above, These are not typical outcomes - but possible. It is hard when introductions don't go well but if aggression is apparent, we NEVER recommend letting your cats figure it out because of what could go wrong. Why would you want to risk it all? We also focus on explaining that many aggressive behaviors observed during interactions are not what they seem - most actually being FEAR based. You may want to correct/stop a cat who is hissing/growling at the opposing cat not realizing that your cat is not looking to "be alpha"- they are actually "AFRAID!"

It's best to take a slow but steady approach, increasing exposure to one another and waiting for your cats to tell you when they are ready for more. So how long is too long? What is considered too soon? What if they never warm up to one another? The truth is - There is no black and white answer OR timeline we can give you. Your unique situation is just that - your cats might take a week, a month or a year. And there is a small possibility, it may not work out at all.

If you are feeling discouraged, hang in there before making a quick decision. First, talk to your resources like your vet, the rescue/breeder you adopted from OR a behavior professional. They may have new insights, an out of the box idea OR just the support you need to decide your next steps. Above all, pay close attention to your cats - they can sometimes give you the answers you are looking for. Patience, time and positivity can go a long way!

In conclusion:
-Before getting another cat, take time to learn about the cat introduction process
-Take your time with introductions - don't rush the process
-Watch your cats behavior, they will tell you how it is going
-Seek help if things are not going well
-Stay positive, stay patient & think clearly when making future decisions
-Some cats will not coexist with others, despite best efforts

Buying a new bed for your cat can be so exciting! But what do you do when they just won’t use it?

New beds can bring new smells and new textures which your cat may not be familiar with. As a result, your cat may be hesitant to do anything more than sniff their new bed - leaving you feeling defeated.
So, do we place them on it?
Nope! That can make them run and avoid it more.

Put their scent on it by putting something familiar like a blanket, towel or sleep cover they already sleep on. Slowly expose more of the new bed leaving that something familiar close by and still touching the new bed. These familiar scents and textures and slow/minimal exposure may be just enough to make the transition easy!

Ritz wanted nothing to do with her new bed because it was completely new to her and nothing like she has ever had. Days went by and zero interest. But now Check her out! Loving her self heating cat mat! 😻

I get asked a lot about CBD products for challenging behaviors and my answer has remained the same, “Right now there are limited studies on the effectiveness of these products but some people share positive experiences.”
Here is a recent study:

“The results from this study suggest that the use of CBD at a 4 mg/kg BW dose was not effective in positively impacting the stress response of cats who experienced travel in a cat carrier and meeting a novel person in an unfamiliar room. These events were however successful in eliciting a significant stress response in this population of cats, as evidenced by elevated plasma cortisol. Further research is required to determine if differences in cat personality traits and coping strategies masked the influence of CBD throughout this trial. Additionally, the rate of CBD absorption, and effects of both dose size and frequency on stress response should be explored—ideally across a variety of other potential feline stress-inducing situations.”

Domestic cats (Felis Catus) are often exposed to stimuli that have the potential to negatively impact their welfare. These can include situations such as veterinary visits, travel, changes to their home environment, and interactions with unfamiliar people or pets. Cannabidiol (CBD)-infused pet produ...

😻 Play is great enrichment for cats, so we’re bringing back these lovely illustrations by Lili Chin from our 2022 International Cat Day campaign!

There are many different ways cats can play, so take note of what your cat likes to do. 🪶 A wand toy is a good place to start – try wiggling it in short bursts along the floor or swooping it slowly through the air above them.

🔔 Give yourself a reminder to play with your cat for 5 minutes each day and you will also see how much it improves your bond with them.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease of cats that occurs throughout the world. It is a complex disease to diagnose and in the last few years, significant developments have occurred in the treatment of this previously fatal condition.Even with treatment, FIP can be a scary journey for both parent and kitty!

One of our feline friends, kitten Autumn is unwell and is suspected to have FIP. Treatment is available but extremely expensive, especially for months. Autumn is an incredible part of her family, she means everything to her best friend - a boy named Charlie. She could use all the love, good wishes and support we could offer. If you can’t donate, we ask if you might please share.

We’re praying for you Autumn 🙏

Frisky Feline Family, welcome these two adorable new friends to the family - sisters, Cecelia and Piper. 😻

During our in home visit these two showed us a thing or two about what they’ve learned from one another as growing kittens like:

1.How to wrestle
2.How to do the cat wheel
And…
3.How to make it through when the front door when it opens!

We had an awesome visit and came up with a plan to help these two move forward to their best days together.
