One breeding season with the right boy will do amazing things for your next generation.

My goals this year have been better wings, bigger crests, and proper mottling. I made a lot of splits for the wings and crests. This fall, it’ll be splits back to mottled for darker skin and better mottling.

Don’t be afraid to set the bar high!

🌼 Use what you’ve got until you’ve got better.
🌼 Don’t keep culls.
🌼 Set your goals & intentionally work toward them.
🌼 Pair/trio breed if you can. See who gives what.
🌼 Grow out your hatchlings to see what you have.
🌼 Two ugly birds can give you a show bird.
🌼 If you don’t know, find somebody who does.

I held back a lot of nice boys because I couldn’t decide who to keep. I’ll have plenty to share next weekend!

I’ve got a decent amount of growout boys (3-5 months-ish) that are (almost twin) brothers to this guy that need to go. 🖤

They are 🆓🆓🆓, pickup in Bristol ASAP, or I can bring some on 9/20 if you’re serious about them. They don’t have the best wings, but that could improve with time (no promises, but mottled doesn’t play by the rules).

I would rather not bring a bunch of cockerels on 9/20 that nobody is going to want.

I’ll put some pics of a few on the comments. They’ll be great for those of us working on dark skin.

I made a new bestie today ♥️

Rehoming pet birds is ✨so✨ hard, especially when they would have been keepers.

Letting them go to a sweet little girl who helps her mama do chores and feeds birds and loves on them every day makes it much easier.

I appreciate the little mottled babies who don’t make me wait 6 months to see what their wings will look like.

I’ve culled juveniles with “bad” wings that turned into adults with wonderful wings 🫠

I almost culled the cockerel who is now giving me these chicks with ✨beautiful✨ wings at a very young age.

So learn from my mistakes and save yourself a lot of regret — don’t let mottled babies go before 5ish months. Their wings are some sort of chicken sorcery that I’ll never understand 🤣
