Nalani Horse Rescue

Nalani Horse Rescue Nalani Horse Rescue is a non-profit 501c3 charity dedicated to rescue, rehab and rehoming of horses Welcome to Nalani Horse Rescue!

Our mission is to provide care and rehabilitation to horses who have suffered abuse, trauma and neglect, bring awareness to the plight of unwanted horses as well as provide education on proper horse care. Horses that are neglected and abused end up in the slaughter pipeline through absolutely no fault of their own—Nalani Horse Rescue is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to changing the outcome fo

r these needy horses.

Horses are highly intelligent and very sensitive animals. When they have endured trauma or neglect—the damage to them is profound and exceeds physical damage. It is often accompanied by emotional and psychological damage. Nalani Horse Rescue takes a multi-step approach to their care. First, we heal them physically and then we slowly and steadily work with them to earn their trust and heal their trauma emotionally and psychologically. Our safe, peaceful, and tranquil environment fosters healing on many levels.

Nalani Horse Rescue recognizes that every horse is an individual. Each horse we rescue is treated with a customized plan for their recovery based on their specific individual unique needs and challenges. Recovery and building trust take time and slow, steady steps. We invest the time each horse needs to move toward their healing.

Getty and Pride have become inseparable, and it’s no surprise. Once Amish workhorses, they share a bond shaped by their past, a quiet understanding that only they can truly feel.

They move through the paddock together, never far from each other’s side. Pride is still guarded, unsure if this new life is real. But in typical Getty fashion, he is showing her that she can finally exhale and embrace her freedom. 🩵

Pride… Once an Amish buggy horse, she arrived emaciated, unsure, and guarded. She still pins her ears when we approach, a habit from a life where humans meant work, not kindness. But, she’s starting to soften. She’s learning what it means to just be - to have food, water, comfort, and no expectations.

Sweet Getty, another lifelong buggy horse, is showing her the way, letting her know she’s safe, that this new life is hers to embrace. 💞

We’ve discovered the way to Cricket’s heart - conversation hearts! It’s hard to imagine anyone being unkind to this sweet little pony, but if winning him over takes a few candy hearts, we’re more than happy to oblige! 🩵🩷💛

Remi is back with us and I’ve been thinking about the best way to share this with you. If you have been following along, you know that Remi was adopted last fall by a wonderful family as a companion for an older mare who is blind in one eye.

At first, it seemed like a perfect match, but as time went on, it became clear that the horses were not a good fit for each other. It’s one thing when horses can develop friendships within a herd, but when you have just two and they don’t get along, there’s really no other option. His adopter and I stayed in communication and worked together to give it every shot. She adores Remi and truly wanted it to work, but in the end we made the decision together that it would be best for Remi to come back to Nalani.

When things like this happen, it’s hard for me to understand the “why.” I have a lot of faith, but I’m not going to pretend it’s easy when I have thanked God for something that ends up falling apart. AND, I also know that I can’t possibly understand the bigger plan at work.

What I DO know is that an older pony mare who was in a bad situation now has a wonderful loving home because she was able to take Remi’s place. And Remi seems thrilled to be back in a herd of playful geldings.

Faith is an interesting thing. It’s not really needed when things go well. It’s in the moments that don’t make sense where it comes into play. Rescue is full of those moments. LIFE is full of those moments. I have learned that real faith means letting go of desired outcomes and embracing each day as it comes, trusting that the picture in my head is nothing compared to what is possible.

So, for now, welcome HOME to Remi. The adorable little lovable horse with a bright future that has yet to be revealed….🩵

Today we got to give Coco a new home! He rode like a champ! My husband Tom made the 882 mile round trip just to get this boy! He unloaded like he has visited us before! Quiet and settled! He met Coco our 14yr lab and they shared. Peanut butter crackers and Purina Apple and Oat cookies! What a sweet boy he is. We are very grateful his owners trusted us with his forever care!!!

I haven’t said much about Pride because honestly, it’s been difficult. She’s been defensive and even a bit aggressive.

But, why wouldn’t she be?! At 23, she was dumped. Emaciated and still wearing road shoes. And here she is in a brand new place. She doesn’t know me. She has no reason to trust me.

Today, I gave her a new padded halter. A simple gesture. I scratched her neck and head behind her ears and she leaned into me. I told her she would never have to work another day in her life. She would always have food and water. She is safe and loved.

And then…she closed her eyes and fell asleep with her head on mine. And now the healing begins. 💜

Coco needs our help! 🐴

Coco is a sweet 20-year-old Connemara gelding whose owner and “best friend” is on hospice. With the end drawing near, he has made the difficult decision to surrender Coco to us.

Connemara Rescue and Retirement Center, Inc in Kentucky has stepped up and offered him sanctuary. We just need to get him there.

I need your help covering Coco’s transportation costs, ensuring he reaches the safety of his new home and bringing peace of mind to his owner in his final days. 🩵 As always, I’m grateful for your support!

Meet Coco!

Coco is a sweet 20 year old Connemara gelding with a puppy dog personality who is in need of a safe home because his owner and “best friend” is on hospice.

Coco, located in Edinburgh, VA, is under 15 hands, gentle and easy to handle. He has been with the same owner since 2008 and has not been ridden during that time, but was ridden prior.

If you have room in your heart and barn, please send me a message. If not, please share this post.

Let’s find this sweet pony a loving home and give someone nearing the end of life the gift of peace of mind. 🩵

For horses, eye injuries can be very serious, so we called Haymarket Veterinary Service right away when we discovered that Getty’s right eye was swollen shut. Getty was so grateful for the help, he gave vet assistant Meredith Matz a hug…and she didn’t mind one bit! 🥰

He’s three days into treatment and we are so happy that he’s feeling better. 🐴🩵

We’re heartbroken to share that Tilly suffered another episode of choke, and we made the compassionate decision to let her go with the full support from our team at New Bolton.

Their assessment revealed that Tilly’s prognosis for a quality life was not good, and we couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering. We’re devastated by this loss, but we take comfort in knowing that Tilly’s short time with us was filled with love, care, and comfort.

Tilly’s story will not end here. In her honor, Liz and I are returning to the auction to save another life and her legacy will live on through the horses we help in the future.

Thank you, Nancy Diaz, for taking such great care of Tilly and thank you for your support and understanding during this difficult time. Let’s keep shining a light on the importance of equine rescue. Every horse deserves the chance at life and peaceful ending that we gave Tilly.
