Nalani Horse Rescue (Nalani is Hawaiian for “the Heavens”) is a non-profit 501c3 organization dedicated to rescuing horses who have suffered abuse, neglect and/or trauma. Our mission is to provide horses in need of rescue with care, rehabilitation and training with the goal of finding them safe, forever homes. es an opportunity to meet their potential in a loving, healthy, and trusting environment. It is a peaceful haven for horses who have been through trauma. There are many factors that lead to a horse being dumped at an auction and headed to a horrific journey and terrifying death in a slaughterhouse. A horse costs at minimum $3K - 10K a year to feed and maintain. Often, people with the best of intentions fall on hard times and can no longer feed and give the proper care to a horse. In the racing and sport horse world, horses are often started far too young and sustain injuries early in life that limit their ability to perform, making them unwanted. As horses age and are no longer able to do a job (whether it’s a lesson horse, cart horse, or show horse), they are often discarded. Sadly, the world is full of cruel people who abuse, neglect, and starve horses for seemingly no reason. Over 100,000 horses are shipped to slaughter every year. Most of our rescues come from an auction where we bid directly against the "meat' buyer to save them from a terrible fate.

When you’re easy peasy, you often get overlooked, but not today! Today was Getty’s day. Spa treatment followed by a long grazing session and I might have snuck him a few treats. He is simply the BEST! 🩵

Saint’s dental surgery was a success and he is already so much more comfortable eating and grazing. The vet removed two large teeth along with a smaller one that had been partially absorbed into his gum causing pain. Thank you to Haymarket Veterinary Service and for all who made it possible to give him this gift! 🩵

We all love Saint’s signature tongue out pose. As endearing as it is, it is a result of the fact that he is missing teeth. He still has two lower teeth that are loose and causing pain. They desperately need to come out, but typically that requires a visit to the hospital and trailering him away from Nick would traumatize him.

Yesterday while the vet was out, I mentioned that I was hopeful that we could do this for him at some point because it’s so sad to watch him struggle to pull up grass and eat out of his bucket. She took a look and feels strongly that she can take care of it at the farm with sedation and x-ray.

This is the best news ever! The surgery is close to $1000 and our vet bills are mounting. I would love to give sweet Saint this gift. Please donate if you feel compelled to help! 🙏🏻🩵🤍

Thank you, Olivia Wagoner, for coming out to do bodywork today. We are still working to resolve pain in Silver’s pelvic area and Nick’s body has scars that are evidence of some sort of accident. Both horses appreciated the pampering and Brew made sure to keep Silver company! 🩶🤍

Remember Charlie and Warrior? These two sweet men were together for 15 years when they found themselves in desperate need of rescue. Once healthy, a wonderful family adopted them. Sadly, Warrior passed away leaving Charlie alone. His family recently learned about a mare and a mini who were in a state of neglect and brought them home and now Charlie has a new little herd. 💙

Beautiful Silver…she has been through absolute hell and is still so trusting and loving. She seemed eager to get outside her paddock so we obliged her and took her for a walk. A change of scenery was just what she needed. New smells, new sights and new perspective. Don’t we all crave a little change in our routine? Horses are no different. 🩶

The sun, the moon, AND the stars aligned for this boy today! An 8-year-old Amish buggy horse, worn out from countless miles, needed a new home. At the same time, a horse in Virginia mourned the loss of his companion and needed a new friend.

Since the Amish horse arrived without a name, we decided to call him Shadow in tribute to today’s eclipse. You won’t believe this….his new companion is named Sunny. 😎

To make it even more special, Shadow is the first Nalani horse to be placed directly into a foster home. The fact that it happened on such a historical day….well…thats what I like to call a God wink. 💫🙏🏻🌙

Several people have asked if the other horses have noticed that Cavo is gone. Not only do they notice, they grieve. Teddy is taking this loss especially hard. As playful and silly as he is, he’s also such a sensitive soul and the expression in his eyes says it all. 🥺 He is resilient and will soon be bright eyed again, but for now I acknowledge him, sit with him, and let him see my tears so he knows we are in this together. A little extra attention from tiny humans doesn’t hurt either. ❤️‍🩹 Nalani Horse Rescue

I had the pleasure of visiting Mr. Scott (and Hope!) on the second anniversary of his adoption. He has come so far from when we pulled him from New Holland where he was on death’s door and declared unfit to go through the auction. He is thriving with a loving family and his barn buddies. When we see skinny horses, it’s obvious that their nutritional needs aren’t being met, but being overweight can be very dangerous for a horse. Remi is naturally chunky and with spring grass coming up, we want to make sure we are doing everything we can to keep him safe. So in addition to spring vaccines, he also had blood work done to test his insulin levels.

Spirit, who went two years without vaccines was very brave for his shots! Thank you Dr. French with Haymarket Veterinary Service for being so kind and patient. 🐴💙 Nalani Horse Rescue

One more shout out before Hike for Horses tomorrow. THANK YOU to Alanwood Farm, home of Nalani. I was introduced to the owner four years ago and she invited me to bring the rescue to Alanwood. I didn’t think there was any way we could make it work, but she insisted that we could figure it out and after a few conversations we moved our four horses there with the option to grow to six. I assured her we were a long way off from having six horses, but we grew to six within a month. Since then, we have had as many as nine horses and as we’ve continued to grow, she has fenced in new paddocks, added run in shelters and supported us in every way possible. Alanwood is the perfect place for rescue horses to enjoy running free and healing from trauma. And with miles of groomed trails and a cross country course, it’s also a special place for equestrians and nature lovers alike. I look forward to sharing this magical place tomorrow! 🐴☀️🍁

It’s amazing watching our horses relax and release tension with the help of SURE FOOT Equine Balance Pads. Teddy is licking and chewing, blinking, and relaxing his lip. The best part is he is in control of how he uses them. I’m a big believer in these pads!

Today was a big day! Kyleigh, our intern, felt an immediate connection to Spirit and has been working on earning his trust. For everyone who has been following Spirit’s story, you know that when I met him at the auction in December of 2020, he was the most terrified horse I’ve ever seen. He was attached to Hope, the little chestnut mare, as a security blanket. We gave him all the time he needed to trust us, and he turned a big corner over the summer. We finally felt him exhale. He is such a smart horse, and we know he has great potential, but we weren’t sure how to find the right person to work with him. Well, the perfect person found us without us even having to look. Here is a little snippet from Spirit’s first time in the round pen. I wish I could have captured the expression of pride on his face.
