Calf learned to heel.
A little fun seeing if a calf can learn to heel.
Bit of Monday humor.
Little animal behaviorism temporarily has a calf heeling good as a well trained dog.
Considering reinforcing the behavior.
Training in distractions.
No treats and after a full meal! 🙂
Another training session: Second session with place command and he didn't break when the deer ran through.
Down maintenance!
Training takes time. Occasional maintenance so they stay in the habit is needed.
It doesn’t have to be rigid. Just an occasional command out of the blue and then let them go back to what they were doing.
Wanting to fine tune and reinforce directional command I mowed an obstacle path.
Many dogs when just milling (not on a track or hunt) will follow a path of least resistance until they hit a track.
Worked well.
This pup needed work on recall. Introduced to tone recall this evening.
A solid, speedy, recall could save a dogs life.
Have worked for the solid recall, and beginning to work on his heeling. Realized he thinks the good boy on the down means to release so working to correct mistakes by giving him primary and secondary reinforcers before letting him up while he is in the down. Got to throw in some escape conditioning as well. To work on solidifying his recall The last several recalls where when he found food I had stashed when he wasn't looking. As soon as he would find it and start to eat I would verbally recall. Treat, praise and release to go back to it. Only once had to use verbal conditioned punisher.
Had added distraction of cattle close by which he wants to engage.
Mowed an obstacle course to help reinforce directional commands.
Works well.
It's always fun, but not always fun and games.
An hour break after second introduction to cart.
Not long after we are here. Still a lot he has to learn.
He showed he was ready at end of second session by trying to enthusiastically drag the cart with the brakes locked.
Second cart introduction. Threw in some obedience to make it more interesting and keep active engagement.
