Public training:
1) Give them lots of exercise before you start training in a public place. If theyโre tired, they will be better behaved!
2) Have a pocket full of treats ready to go
3) Try a belted hands-free leash with a handle for control so you can shop or grab whatever you need to
4) Start small. Take them in and out of a store for only a few minutes at a time, holding their attention and giving lots of treats, and then head back home. Gradually increase time as they get better.
if going into the store feels like too much, try sitting outside at a bench or in a park first and holding their attention.
5) Reward! Lots of positive praise. Keep working up the amount of time until you feel relaxed with them and youโre working together as a team.
Why do we do this? Couldnโt we just leave our dogs at home? Yes, absolutely. But the more socialization and unique environments we put the dogs in, the better behaved they will be overall.โบ๏ธ And remember, always check at the store is dog friendly first!
