The African painted dogs were chirping and chittering away for their birthday!

Earlier this month Daisie and Roanne celebrated their fifth birthday with enrichment set up by their animal care staff. As you can hear, the painted dogs make lots of noise while investigating these boxes filled with treats. These dogs communicate using a variety of different vocalizations including chirps, whistles, and chatter when hunting, greeting, or playing together. Wish Daisie and Roanne a happy birthday below!

Sasha the Amur leopard is sitting pretty and showing off his beautiful fur coat.

Amur leopards are native to the forests in mountainous regions in Russia and China. In order to survive the cold climate, a leopard's fur will grow about two inches longer to help them stay warm in the winter!

Hang in there folks, we're halfway to Friday!

As an arboreal creature, sloths spend a ton of time in the trees. Their long, curved claws act as a hook when hanging onto branches and vines!

Something special will be making a splash at Seven Seas soon! 🐬

We’re thrilled to share that Allie, a 37-year-old bottlenose dolphin and experienced mom, is expecting a new calf this summer! Allie is now in her second trimester and is being closely cared for by our dedicated animal care and veterinary teams.

Thanks to her strong bond with her team, Allie willingly participates in check-ups like ultrasounds and blood tests to monitor her health and her calf’s milestones. With dolphin pregnancies lasting about 12 months, we may see signs of a birth as early as May.

Stay tuned for updates as we count down to this special arrival!

We hope you enjoyed the nearly 900 beautifully decorated Tree Trim trees that brightened the Zoo this past holiday season!

The official ornament collection period has ended, but some ornaments still remain on the trees. We’re thrilled to invite you to collect them during our free admission day tomorrow, Thursday, January 16.

Help us keep our planet sparkling clean while adding a little extra sparkle to your tree!

A quick note: To help us prepare for next year, please leave the light strands on the trees, as they will be reused to brighten future celebrations.

And don’t forget—our Free Days continue every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday through February 27. We look forward to seeing you!

ICYMI: Two baby binturongs (also known as bintlets) were born last June!

Binturongs typically have one or two babies after a brief gestation period of about 90 days. Bintlets are born with their eyes closed so they will often cling to their mother for the first few days of their lives!

These parrots are perched in paradise. ✨

Blue-throated macaws, native to the forests and tropical grasslands of Bolivia, thrive in warm climates. Regular misting not only helps keep their feathers healthy but also provides a playful source of mental enrichment!

Bison are built to thrive in the harshest winters!

Their thick, woolly coats trap heat so effectively that snow can pile up on their backs without melting. This amazing adaptation helps them conserve body heat and stay cozy even in freezing conditions.

We can bear-ly believe how fast time flies!

It's been a little over a year since we welcomed rescued brown bear siblings, Tim and Jess, to the Zoo. When they arrived as 11-month old cubs they weighed in at around 200 pounds each. Now, Jess has more than doubled her weight, tipping the scales at 413 pounds, while Tim has grown to an impressive 670 pounds.

A brown bear's weight can vary by age, gender, and time of year. When fully grown, a male brown bear can weigh up to 1,000 pounds!

You know what they say: nine brains are better than one!

Octopuses are proof that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. An octopus has a total of nine brains: one central brain and one mini brain at the end of each arm called "ganglia." These mini brains are actually a collection of neurons which help them independently control each of their arms. You can stop by the Living Coast to see the octopus in action on your next visit!

Koalas take their snack time seriously! 🐨

Koalas can eat up to 2.5 pounds of eucalyptus leaves a day, but because the leaves are low in nutrients, they spend most of their time resting to conserve energy.

HISTORY

In 1919 Edith Rockefeller McCormick had a dream to build the biggest zoological park with modern construction that included bar-less enclosures allowing people to connect with animals and provide educational opportunities. Her vision led to the donation of 83 acres to the Forest Preserve District of Cook County for that purpose. The Chicago Zoological Park was chartered in 1922. The zoo resides in a park like setting with over 216 acres that feature stunning buildings in the Italian Renaissance and Art Deco style designed by Edwin H. Clark, a prominent Chicagoland architect. There are sculptures made by the team of WPA artists that were in residence from 1934-1938. The zoo took 15 years to construct, but opening weekend had a turn out of over 53,504 eager visitors.
