Simparica Trio
Recently we have heard from clients as well as been made aware of online (esp. Facebook) posts regarding neurological side effects of Simparica Trio. We currently prescribe Simparica Trio with frequency and have seen minimal to no side-effects with the product.
The genesis of the postings are related to Simparica Trio containing a compound called sarolaner, which is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class of compounds have been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures in dogs with or without a history of neurologic disorders. The aforementioned wording was added to all isoxazoline containing products roughly a year ago. There are currently 4 main canine products on the market which contain this class of compound: Simparica, Simparica Trio, Nexgard, and Bravecto. The concentration of the compounds in each of these products are as follow: 0.91mg/kg, 1.2mg/kg, 2.28mg/kg, and 25-56mg/kg respectively. As you can see the Simparica products are at least 50% lower in dose content that any of the other products. Revolution Plus for Cats also contains sarolaner at a concentration of 6mg/kg. We have minimal to no side effects with Nexgard, Simparica, or Revolution Plus, but have seen a few neurological side effects with Bravecto.
At this point we believe it is fair to mention the rigid FDA approval process these products go through as well as our past experiences with this same type of negative, inflammatory and scare tactic type postings when Trifexis and ProHeart came on the market. In at least one case some of this negative activity was directly traced to an employee of a competing manufacturer which was and continues to loose market share in the heartworm and flea control category.
Finally, you have our assurance that we would never recommend nor personally use a product which we believe is of risk to your or our own pets.
