It was a long but very fun and successful weekend at the Golden Circle Horse Show! This was the biggest show most of these girls had ever participated in and they all handled it so well. There was so much valuable experience gained and I think every one of them came home a better horse person.

Attention summer campers: It is going to be hot this week, so be sure to bring a swim suit for water time!

Day two of intermediate/advanced camp was a success! The girls helped care for the horses in the morning, learned about types of jumps and jump courses, then headed to the outdoor arena for a group crossrails lesson. After lunch they cleaned bridles and learned how to take them apart and put them back together. After that they learned how to wrap legs with Rez, who was very content to nap in the crossties while they practiced!

We still have a couple of openings for our advanced camp next week! This is going to be a highly educational camp geared towards our more experienced teens and pre-teens. It will be a great time and a great experience!

Even the barn dogs have a blast at summer camp! What music do you think is playing in Artemis's head while he frolics through the hay field?

The Old Mill girls had an amazing day showing at the Southwest Missouri Hunter Jumper Association (SMHJA) show hosted by SWMRABS today! Leta and Diva (Hollywood Bonus) took home the championship in ground poles and Lauren and Lumpy (Ghost Sandy Man) took home the championship in crossrails 12-17! Great job, girls!

Horse Shows, What to Wear?
Part 1: Hunt Seat

Hunt seat classes vary from breed show style pleasure classes such as Hunter Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle to Hunter Over Fences. Hunt Seat Equitation is also lumped under this dress code.
Hunters are all about being conservative and uniform. Bling is illegal, no sparkly helmets or browbands allowed. Tack should be brown, not black, and fancy stitching is about as wild as it gets! Saddle pads should be shaped fleece pads, no square pads and certainly not colorful!

In breed show pleasure classes, such as found at Arabian, Quarter Horse, Paint, Morgan, Saddlebred, etc shows, there is more freedom for expression and you will see colorful hunt coats. The older style wool coats have fallen out of fashion in the open hunter/jumper world, favoring the technical fabrics and the conservative colors such as black and navy. Equitation riders should always wear a conservative coat, no matter the venue.

Beige or khaki breeches are standard in the hunter ring. Field boots are the most popular type of tall boot for hunters. At the local level half chaps are acceptable, and for children 10 and under jods with paddock boots are perfectly acceptable.

At local schooling shows a polo shirt is often the standard dress code, but at the recognized level a show shirt and hunt coat are required. Always be sure to check the rules of your association!

The style of hair for the rider depends on the type of show. For many breed show events long hair should be worn in a bun just below the helmet. In the open hunter/jumper world the hair is worn in a hair net and tucked up into the helmet.

Did you know rulebooks are FREE online? Reading your rulebook is the best way to understand legal and illegal equipment and attire, as well as the specifications of the class.

https://www.usef.org/compete/resources-forms/rules-regulations/rulebook covers rules for hunters, equitation, and breeds such as Arabians, Morgans, and Saddlebreds

https://www.aqha.com/aqha-rulebook covers rules for Quarter Horses, and many local circuits follow the AQHA rulebook.

Hey !

Can we please be sure to clean up after ourselves around the barn. The barn does not magically clean itself, the amazing Nancy Carlson works very hard to keep things nice for us. That being said, she is NOT a maid. You are responsible for throwing away your trash and putting away your things. The wash bays and all of our publicly used areas depend on everyone cleaning up after themselves. Please take extra care to make sure that you are putting away your things, throwing away your trash, and cleaning up after your horse.
Thanks everyone and make sure you tell Nancy thanks for everything she does.
