Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim, and others may hate the water. Be conscious of your dog’s preferences and skills before trying to make him swim. If you’re swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow water. Never throw your dog into the water.
Don’t let your dog overdo it; swimming is great exercise but is also very hard work and your dog may tire quickly. Never leave your dog unattended! You should always be in a position to help him or her get out of the water.
If you have a pool, make sure your dog knows where the stairs or ladder are located. Be sure that pool covers are firmly in place; dogs have been known to slip in under openings in the covers and drown.

With the very warm weather we have been experiencing blue-green algae or Cyanobacteria has the potential to appear on freshwater lakes, streams, ponds, etc. Blue-green algae can be extremely dangerous when ingested. There is no way to tell by looking at the algae whether it is toxic unless tested. Any algae should therefore be treated as toxic. A list of symptoms as well as more information can be found at the link below. If you suspect your pet has ingested any algae please call your veterinarian immediately!

HOT CARS ARE DEATH TRAPS!

Cars heat up faster than you think! In Minnesota, a person may not leave a dog or cat unattended in a standing or parked motor vehicle in a manner that endangers the pet’s health and/or safety. This may result on a petty misdemeanor, a fine or authorities may use reasonable force to remove the pet from your car. (Minnesota Statute 346.57) Even on seemingly mild days, an enclosed car can be deadly. In a Stanford University study, when it was 72 degrees outside, a car’s internal temperature was measured at 116 degrees within one hour. In a San Francisco State university study, when it was 80 degrees outside, the temperature inside a car rose to 99 degrees in 10 minutes and 109 degrees in 20 minutes. Normal body temperature for dogs is 100-102.5 degrees. A dog can only stand high body temperatures for a short time before suffering nerve damage, liver damage, brain damage or death. Dogs are especially vulnerable as they can only cool off by panting and the sweat glands in the pads of their feet. Cracking the windows has little to no effect on a car’s internal temperature

Summertime parties and the 4th of July are great celebrations, but the noise and flashes of fireworks and firecrackers can frighten and stress your dog. Some dogs can become so disoriented and afraid of all the loud noises that they run away and become lost.

Make sure your pet has an ID tag with your information (phone number, address, etc.)

Keep your pet indoors during firework displays. Find a quiet area with closed curtains and turn on the TV or radio to reduce the ability for your dog to hear the fireworks. Plan on taking your dog for a walk earlier in the day rather than in the evening when fireworks are more likely to be used.

Use thundershirts, a crate or kennel to help give your pet a safe space during an anxious time.

Talk to your veterinarian if you feel your pet needs medication to help with the noise of fireworks.

A few things to consider when planning to board your pets; remember to get required vaccinations and preventative care up to date. Most boarding facilities require the Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella (dogs only for Bordetella) vaccinations to be up to date before dropping off your pet. This helps prevent any communicable diseases from being passed to your pet during their stay at the boarding facility. Many boarding facilities require a negative f***l floatation within the past six months to ensure that pets are not transmitting intestinal parasites to your pet and other pets as well. It is also recommended that flea/tick prevention be applied a few days before dropping your pet off for boarding in order to make sure your pet does not bring home any unwanted flea friends.
If you have the option of bringing along your pet’s regular diet it is recommended to do so. A sudden change in diet may result in stomach upset, especially when already stressed from being away from home. Feeding a pet their regular diet instead of the food available at the boarding facility may reduce the chances of vomiting/diarrhea during their stay.

The human habitat continues to expand, which means we have more wildlife coming into our neighborhoods and even backyards. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread by contaminated urine. We are seeing more and more cases of Leptospirosis in our city dogs. This is important due to the zoonotic potential (may be transmitted to people) of the Leptospirosis bacteria. There is a vaccine available for dogs to help protect against 4 of the most common strains of Leptospirosis. Call for more details.

Right now is prime time for tick exposure! Especially with all the warmer winter weather we have been experiencing. Lyme disease is the most commonly reported tick-borne disease reported in the US. Make sure your pet is protected with flea/tick prevention as well as an up-to-date Lyme vaccine for our canine friends.
Tips for prevention of Lyme disease:
In dogs-
1. Flea/tick prevention such as Frontline Gold or Nexgard
2. Brush dogs frequently during tick season and perform thorough tick checks.
3. If you find an attached tick, remove it promptly with tweezers and without crushing the tick. Contact veterinarian if you have any concerns.
In humans –
1. Be aware of high tick exposure areas.
2. Wear light colored clothing to help you spot and remove ticks before they attach.
3. Wear long sleeved shirt tucked into pants with pants tucked into socks.
4. Conduct frequent, full body tick checks.
