Yesterday I got to chronicle something beautiful through simple rushed photos at the end of training. Willis is a doodle that was owner-surrendered after massive neglect and horrible care. Imagine your typical matted doodle. He was 100 times worse, but his new owner is a groomer who has been maintaining him much better in the past months. I was astonished Willis was so neglected because he is the most well-behaved doodle I have ever seen (and I have a good handful of favorite doodles).
Nicole is a woman with 3 young children, recently widowed, who has always been the homemaker while her military husband handled finances and bills.
Both amazing souls have endured mistreatment, abandonment, and hardship greater than most of us will ever be able to feasibly comprehend. But here in this photo they both look so happy. These are pictures of new beginnings. These are pictures of restored hope. These are pictures of victory. These are pictures of the transition from victim to survivor. These are pictures of long, overdue self-worth and self-empowerment.
Willis is living his best life these days with Kim Dove, owner of Poodoodles Grooming Salon. Nicole is my grooming trainee, and this is her first full groom. Be on the lookout for her new salon, Peachy Paws, opening soon.
(There are a million more words i could say, but im so overwhelmed by emotions. I love the grooming industry so i didnt feel worthy to train when nicole initially reached out..she was a stranger and said she felt led to me to help her.. im proud of where we are and how safely she handles every dog. Im proud of how she advocates for every dog, including the difficult ones and makes them as comfortable as possible without forcing grooms on them. Im proud of how she thinks about stuff i tell her in training and will ask about it a week later after shes thought of all of her questions. Im also proud to have her as a friend.. im excited to see her salon grow and already lining up continuation training and seminars to help her out as she grows and surpasses my skill level. Yes, i sharpen now, but my heart will always be in dog grooming as well.)
Kim Dove i was not planning to train any aspiring groomers, and i am forever thankful for you allowing us to share salon space on short notice. I love that we have been able to team up and help others in the area. I want our dog groomers in the area to have each other as friends and an internal support network, and you ALWAYS help me with that! I love seeing all that you do for local shelters and your local community, so please never think your kindness goes unseen.
