Heartworm Prevention Month

April is Heartworm Awareness Month, it's important to fully understand the disease to be able to protect your pets. All it takes it routine testing and monthly prevention to keep your pet SAFE!

Heartworm affects an animal’s health and quality of life long after the heartworms are gone.

Spring is here, and mosquitoes have already started their emergence. Besides being terribly annoying, mosquitoes can carry the nematode parasite known as Dirofilaria immitis, which causes heartworm. Mosquitoes acquire the parasite while feeding on an infected host. Once ingested by the mosquito, the parasite develops into mature infective larvae. These larvae then migrate to the “mouthpart” of the mosquito so that when it bites, they move into the wound created and deposit themselves into the bloodstream where they will then begin the harmful portion of their life cycle.
Heartworm is only conveyed through the bite of an infected mosquito, therefore an infected dog cannot transmit the disease to either people or other pets.

Contact us if you'd like to get your dog tested for heartworms and we can get you started on heartworm prevention right away!!

***BEEN ADOPTED***

Please help us rehome this neutered (up to date on vaccines) male cat. He is estimated to be around 2 years old. He was a stray a client brought in and could not keep because he is positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV is a disease that is infectious to other cats, so he needs a 1 cat household or he can live with other FIV positive cats. FIV will make him ore prone to infections throughout his life mainly Upper Respiratory Tract Infections which can be treated with antibiotics. He is a very affectionate cat, he purs and rubs up on you all he can. He uses the litterbox well and is a very good eater. He weighs 13lbs and is all muscle!
If anybody is interested, please call the office at 641-522-7396

April is national Heartworm month!

Let’s get your pets on preventatives so they don’t get heartworms. Heartworms are more common in dogs, but cats can get them as well. Heartworms are a parasitic roundworm transferred from pet to pet through a bite from a mosquito carrying immature heartworm larva. The mosquito has the larva in its system from previously biting a pet that was already infected with heartworm. The heartworm larva will then travel to your pet’s heart and mature into a worm = thus the term HEARTWORM. The mature heartworms can cause severe damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
Heartworm prevention works by killing the parasite before it has a chance to travel to the heart and become an adult worm.
Before we start Heartworm preventatives, we need to make sure our pets don’t already have the heartworms. We do this by testing blood with a heartworm test.
Clients ask a lot why we need to do yearly heartworm testing if their pet is already on a preventative, especially if they are on all year round preventative. My professional opinion on this issue is yes we do need to test yearly and here are the reasons why I recommend this:
**Finding heartworm infection early before they have time to do too much damage to the heart is key for a better prognosis. Yes, they have been on prevention, but it never hurts to double check, especially with such a serious disease.
**Also, something you may not realize when we test for heartworms the test more veterinary clinics use (and I use in office) also tests for diseases transferred by ticks, like Lyme disease. Lyme disease is very common in Iowa and can only be found by testing it.

3 reasons you should book an equine dental appointment with your vet today:

✅ Yearly exams catch problems early, keeping your horse comfortable and saving owners from potentially bigger vet bills
✅ Access to a licensed professional provides the most educated and trained individual to care for your horse
✅ A horse’s mouth can be a source of problems throughout the body, not just limited to the teeth and head. Getting the all-clear after a float will help ensure smooth sailing as warmer weather and more barn time makes its arrival.

**FRIENDLY REMINDER**
With Easter around the corner here are some common Easter things for your pets to avoid.

1.Chocolate
(causes •Vomiting •Diarrhea •Hyperactivity •Tremors •Seizures (or fits) •Heart problems •Death, in severe cases)

2. Flowers and plants
•Lilies, •daffodils, •tulips, •hyacinths, •bluebells and many, many more common plants can be harmful to our pets, especially if the bulb is ingested. Symptoms of plant poisoning include •drooling, •nausea, •vomiting, •diarrhea, •an increased heart rate and •increased respiratory rate.

3. Human Sweets
(May contain Xylitol and can spike their insulin levels, causing dangerously low blood sugar levels that can be life-threatening if left untreated.

4. Ham Bones
can easily break off pieces of bone, which can cause life-threatening blockages in the digestive system.

5. Onions or Chives or Garlic
All parts of onion, chives, & garlic are toxic

6. Grapes
When dogs eat grapes of any kind and in any form, they are at risk of kidney (renal) failure. All types of grapes, whether cooked, seedless, peeled, dried, or fresh, are toxic to dogs, even in small amounts.
