Look at this beautiful girl! Her name is Rhea (pronounced Raya)... She is just a little bit over a year old now and weighs a healthy 40 lb. She's an upbeat, easy dog, walks beautifully on leash and is a joy to be with.

Although Rhea needs a minute to figure out that she can trust new people, she turns into a love bug after that. She enjoys running around in the yard just as much as she likes to lay in your lap. She's fine curling up next to you in bed, or sleeping soundly in her crate. She lives with nine other dogs right now in a staff foster pack and gets along with each one really well.

Although she enjoys being in her foster home with her big friend group of dogs, she needs an opportunity to be in her own family where she can continue learning about all the fun things that life entails. She would love to have a dog friend in her new home too.

This is a really good dog.

Sweet old Maybelline got a new coat for the holidays and she figured if she dressed up and was looking her best someone would take her home. But the holidays came and went and here she is.

Mabel, as we call her for short, is a wonderful 12ish year old girl who still has some pep in her step! She loves to go for walks and absolutely adores a joyride! She still hops up in the car or truck like a champ and she's eager to go on little adventures. She's also extremely polite in the car, and in public.

She's very happy to just curl up in a blankie or on the couch. With a few little p*e breaks during the day, some couch time and a few kind words, this girl would be grateful.

Super easy dog, doesn't ask for anything, just needs a spot to land in her elder years, which at this point are limited.

Anyone out there have a place in their heart for a sweet, old, easy girl?

She doesn't need to be the only pet as she really likes kitty cats. But she doesn't like dogs that are in her face and she will let them know that If they are too rambunctious or disrespectful.

Otherwise she's a bowl of peaches. She's always so happy about anything or nothing at all- If you've got space in your heart and on your couch this girl is the one for you!

For more information please review our adoption application and contract which will be posted in the comment thread below. You can also email [email protected] after reviewing the adoption material with any further questions!

Katie and her yellow lab brother Kurtis are still looking for there forever homes. They are gentle, little, playful puppies who are vetted and ready to go.

Katie, the black retriever, can be shy at first. We'd really love to find her a home sooner than later, so she can be coddled and get used to being in a home.

Kurtis is a little more outgoing than his sister, But would definitely benefit from some patience and affection.

They are sweet, healthy puppies who just need someone to show them the ropes before puppy hood is over.

Each puppy would definitely benefit from being with an older confident dog who actually would enjoy the company of a puppy.

If interested please check out our adoption information online. You can review the contract and if you agree, you can email [email protected] with your application, contract agreement and any further questions you might have!

How cute is Webster's sleepy face waking up from a post-breakfast nap? ❤🐽❤

When Webster and his brother Wallace (behind) came to us on Thanksgiving Day 2023 from an emergency rescue, they were filthy and cold living in mud and waste up to their bellies without proper shelter from the elements. They weren't being regularly fed and often didn't have access to clean water. Without immediate intervention, they would not have survived the winter.

These days, Webster and Wallace alternate from running and exploring in their big fenced habitat to get their teenager energy out, hanging out with their giant piggy friends, enjoying nutritious food and an endless supply of clean water, and snuggling up in cozy, fluffy, straw nests with radiant heat in the floor below--what a difference! The boys also know how to charm their way into regularly getting treats like apples, which is why even though he is sleepy in the photo, Webster is watching to make sure he doesn't miss out on a snack. 😍

Keeping everyone warm and happy--especially with over 620 someones in our care on any given day--is no small feat in the cold, Maine winters. But no matter what the day or weather brings, our team is always focused on helping each and every one of our rescued friends live their very best lives. It is our promise to them.

Want to help us help them? Consider becoming a monthly supporter to help us keep Webster and his friends happy and safe for the rest of their lives. ❤

You’ve probably seen us posting photos of Fay and Feliz, two playful and rascally goat kids with a habit for climbing anything/everything, especially if it has wheels!

Well, this little beauty is their mother, Fran, who arrived with her daughters this summer from a state cruelty case. We’re so glad their family is safe together, now and for the rest of their lives. We love you, Frannie! ❤️

🎉 Happy New Year! 🎉

Do you care about animals?
Do you care about people?
Do you care about our planet?

Then what better way to ring in the NewYear than living vegan?

At its heart, veganism is about not causing unnecessary harm and suffering to other living beings. And the animals alone are reason enough to live vegan, but the benefits of veganism extend far beyond that. Shifting to vegan living is a powerful way to combat climate change, minimize biodiversity loss, conserve water, protect our oceans, combat world hunger, and more.

To celebrate the New Year, we put our Vegan Sanctuary Cookbook (linked in comments) up on our website—so click through the viewer to find new recipes or download your own copy to keep!

Many of our friends might recognize Jack (black & white), a special little goat we took in about a year ago last winter. At five years old when we rescued him, Jack had spent his life living inside someone’s bedroom. Since being purchased as a very young kid, Jack had never been allowed to spend time outside or been around other goats. When the person who kept him like this died and none of the other people involved wanted to keep him, Jack found himself without a place to live. So, we took him in.

When he arrived, Jack did not understand he was a goat. He spent much of the winter hanging out inside the warm people barn, taking quick strolls outside in his jacket and then demanding to come back inside. As spring came, Jack wanted to spend more and more time outside, but he was very unsure around goats. Despite many attempts to help him make goat friends, Jack quickly decided he preferred donkeys (particularly Abby, one of our special needs donkeys) to goats. As one of our daytime free roamers, each morning Jack would leave the goat barn and go straight to the donkey barn to spend his days. So, Jack became an honorary “donkey," getting his own special stall in the donkey barn where he decided to make his home.

Well, flash forward a bit more, and you can imagine our surprise and delight to see how this little cutie, Zelda (white), who arrived from a state cruelty case this fall (along with three other little goats), has worked her way into Jack’s heart. The two have quickly become quite the pair. They eat together, sleep together, go on strolls together, eat second breakfast together with Abby the donkey, and visit with their other donkey friends. As long as we can keep everyone safe and make sure they have what they need, it always makes us happy to let our animals have as much of a say in how they spend their days and who they spend them with. So, now we have two honorary “donkeys” here on the ridge!

Chase’s mother, Celie, spent the first five or six years of her life on a local dairy farm giving birth to calf after calf, all of whom were taken away at birth. When her production declined, she was auctioned off while pregnant and someone bought her to start their own backyard dairy.

Shortly after, Chase (pictured) was born. Kept in a small, makeshift enclosure, Chase quickly learned to escape and was often found running down a busy road. The people who bought Celie planned on sending little Chase to slaughter because he kept running off, but one of the family members had a soft spot for him and reached out asking for help.

So, we made her a deal—we’ll take the baby, but ONLY if his mom can come with him. After losing so many calves, we weren’t going to take another from Celie. They both deserved freedom.

And that is the story of how little Chase saved not only himself, but his mother too. 😍

Jackson and Phillip are fourteen year old steer that were trained as a pulling team from calves and used in competitions. We were contacted about this bonded pair a couple months ago on the day they were slated to be sent to slaughter. We were told if we didn’t take them, they were going to be killed later that day…

With over 635 animals, we’re always so very, very full.

But we couldn’t bare the thought of these gentle giants being killed.

So, just like we’ve done so many times before, we quickly mobilized and made a plan to save them, ordering another run-in barn and making plans to shift things to make room.

We were told they were “blue ribbon show cows,” so we were shocked to see how underweight they were when we picked them up. But fixing up skinny animals is par for the course around here. It is what we do.

At just over three months since the boys arrived, they are looking better and better each week. Here is a photo from today and one from their rescue day in September. We’re so glad they have a safe forever home with us, and grateful for everyone who helps us bring happy endings to animals. ❤️❤️❤️

The sun sure does feel nice on these cold days—just ask Bryce! ☀️😍☀️

Each year, we’re always excited to get to the other side of Winter Solstice, knowing that even though we have plenty of wintery weather still to come here in Maine, we’ll be getting in just a little more precious daylight with each passing day. ❤️

This old gal is Maybelline. We call her Mabel for short. She is somewhere around 10 or 11, but she still has plenty of s***k and her most favorite thing is going for rides! 🛻🛻🛻

She'd love to be your companion while you do errands or farm chores. She's great with kitty cats. Tolerates other dogs but she doesn't always love them.

This old girl is such a joy to be around! Can we please find her some love out there?! She's awesome in the house and although during a transition she might have a little bit of separation anxiety once she settled she's good to go. We know this because we had her in Foster for a little while- and she needed a little help during that first week but after that she was home sweet home during the time she was being hosted.

For information on adopting Mabel please review are adoption contract, and if you have any questions please reach out to [email protected]

Rhea: (pronounced Raya) is a 10-12 month old mix of shy, sweet, snuggly, and couch potato. There's definitely some lab in there and we think some boxer- she has a very cute underbite and a boxer profile. A DNA would be very interesting!

She needs a minute to figure out that she can trust you, but she turns into a love bug after that. She enjoys running around in the yard just as much as she likes to lay down on your lap. She's fine curling up next you in bed, or sleeping soundly in her crate. She lives with nine other dogs and gets along with each one really well.

Her future is a blank slate. She's really malleable dog who will learn quickly in a new environment and will repay a little bit of well spent patience with a whole lot of love. She would love to be buddied up with another social dog.

There are a lot of dogs out there who are waiting for someone special to connect with their picture. Most of those dogs will never be met and won't get the chance that they so desperately need. Raya was one of those dogs- she was never going to get out of the shelter system alive- there are just too many super extroverted dogs or prettier dogs or whatever people think....to compete with. We took her and she's blossomed with us. She's not a difficult dog. She's actually quite easy. She just needs someone to give her a chance.

*** the Golden is adopted***

These little cutie patooties were spayed and neutered yesterday. They're waiting so patiently but their Christmas wish is to have a home for the new year

Kurtis is a little yellow lab, Goldie is- you guessed it- a golden mix, and then there's little Kate who looks like a black lab but has some spots of longer fur.

They are right around 5 months old, healthy, s***ky, cute little babes.

If interested in making their wish come true, please check out all of our adoption information first (link in comments) including the contract, and send in your application to [email protected]

Teddy the turkey loves showing off for anybody who will admire his beauty… That includes his donkey, friends too!

Our magnificent, friendly, funny Teddy is such a delight to be around… so is his bff Tully, who came in with him from animal control shortly before Thanksgiving this year.

We wish everyone could get to really know a turkey like Teddy… Maybe then we’d stop killing them by the millions.

Our Story

Peace Ridge Sanctuary was founded in 2001 and is located on over 1,000 acres in the rolling hills of midcoast Maine. While our primary focus is on farmed animal rescue and rehabilitation, we also have an equine rescue program, a senior dog rescue program, and we maintain the majority of our acreage as wildlife conservation land. At any given time, PRS is home to over 300 rescued animals. We also promote compassionate lifestyle choices through our comprehensive humane education program.
