Did you know these facts about pet dental hygiene?

-About 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have periodontal disease by just the age of 2
-Doggy and kitty breath is actually not normal, and could actually be a sign of poor dental health, pain and inflammation in your furry friend
-Periodontal diseases are the most commonly diagnosed conditions amongst pets
Despite being so important, a petā€™s dental health is often overlooked when owners consider their petā€™s overall well-being, meaning that chronic pain and inflammation could be happening right under your nose! Our goal at [Hospital Name] is to change that, and help you become the best friend and owner for your pets! Taking the necessary steps at home that mentioned in our last dental post, and bringing your pet in for a dental cleaning during their wellness exams can help make healthy smiles and a happier pet.

ā€œAnother insurance policy?ā€ Pet insurance can sound like just another policy to add to your list of monthly expenses, but we want to show you that itā€™s actually quite different from what you might think! Here are a few reasons why pet insurance is different from human health insurance:

Cost. When compared to human health insurance, pet insurance is significantly more affordable! Influenced by type of coverage, species, breed, and age, the average premium is $49/month for dogs and $28/month for cats.

In terms of coverage, unlike human health policies, your petā€™s policy can be used at any hospital. Because pet insurance covers some or all of your bills (depending on the coverage chosen) through reimbursements, youā€™ll simply pay your vet bill upfront and file a claim to be reimbursed.

Just like us, our petsā€™ teeth need to be taken care of on a normal basis as well. And, tooth be told, who doesnā€™t love a good smile?

Whether youā€™re at the vet or at home, there are plenty of ways to care for your petā€™s pearly whites to help them have the healthiest smile possible! Here are a few ways you can do just that:
Brush their teeth. Yup, the same way we do! Get your pet a toothbrush and some toothpaste specifically made for them and get brushing. This can take some getting used to, so ease them into the routine. Start by brushing just a few teeth for a few seconds, then gradually work your way through brushing all teeth.
Give them a (dental) treat approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. The Council collects data showing that these approved treats actually work to decrease tartar accumulation. There are plenty of great dental treats out there that may be a little more enjoyable (and more appreciated) by your furry friend.
Choose a chew approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. There are numerous options when it comes to chews, but the act of chewing or gnawing can actually do a great job at keeping your petā€™s teeth clean and healthy.
Dental Cleanings. Bringing your pet in for a dental cleaning is a great way to promote a healthy smile. During your appointment, your vet can check for anything in your petā€™s mouth that may need some extra care or attention while doing the cleaning.

Letā€™s talk pet insurance! We get it. It can be pretty overwhelming and confusing, reading through all the different bundles, plans, and policies that the numerous insurance providers have to offer you and your pet. Thatā€™s why weā€™d like to help you narrow down your options a bit.

When considering the right policy for your pet, be sure to compare all the various options available and find the one that makes sense for your petā€™s lifestyle and circumstances. To start, make a list of the things that you think your pet may need, and what you want to have included for your petā€™s coverage. Once youā€™ve compiled your list, see which of the three options available best firts your petā€™s needs: Accident-Only Plans, Accident and Illness Plans, or Pet Wellness Plans. Once youā€™ve identified which one is right for you, the next step is to consider costs of coverage. From there, you can narrow down the list of providers based on what you want to pay for and can fit into your budget.
If you still need help choosing the right plan, consult with your veterinarian and see what they think your pet may or may not need coverage for.
