Every summer, the young Swainson’s Hawks amaze and delight us with their combination of toughness and goofiness. This little guy was well enough to move from our ICU to an outdoor flight cage today. If all goes well, he will join a kettle of other youngsters and they will fly to Argentina together in the fall! In the meantime, they are all eating a ton of food to ready themselves for migration.

This formidable fledgling Great Horned Owl fell out of its nest in early March, when it was only a few days old. We paired it with our foster mama owl as soon as he got strong enough to hold his head up on his own. Now the two are out in an outdoor flight cage, which has a custom set-up for baby owls. They will soon be joined by the rest of the Great Horned Owl babies we’ve received for care until they are all old enough for release.

We are hard at work prepping for our busy season, which starts ramping up with the arrival of baby Great Horned Owls. They could start arriving any day, now!

Enjoy this photo of some Northern Saw-whet Owls we cared for in the past. The juveniles have stunning dark plumage (left) and grow into the lighter adult plumage. These are one of the smaller owls in Colorado, and they nest in conifer forests.

If you’d like to help us take care of the sick, injured, or orphaned birds in our care, please visit Birds-of-prey.org/donate to find out how!

Meet the Common Poorwill! These nocturnal, migratory insectivores aren’t raptors, but people often think they’re owls and bring them to us for care. These 3 will be over-wintering with us as they came in after they should have already been much further south.

Sending an enormous thank you to everyone who contributed to our successful 2023 Fall Migration dinner: donors, sponsors, volunteers, attendees, and our own Andrea Lutz, for making it all happen! It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and meet new ones!!

Your support helps us to treat birds like this baby Bald Eagle. We weren’t sure he’d make it through his first night with us, he was found starved and dehydrated, with a huge open wound on his wrist, infested with ectoparasites. See him here, in our outdoor flight cage, working out some of the kinks in that wing. He still has a long way to go to get to full flying strength, but we are thrilled to see his progress so far!

Hi Friends! Wondering what to do with your Saturday night? Consider joining us for a great night of food, friends, and comedy as we raise money to continue helping heal birds of prey and get them back into the wild. Tickets available at the door. The fun starts at 5:30 pm and runs until 9:00 at the Copper Leaf Gardens & Event Center, 1200 Miramonte St. in Broomfield, CO. See comments for more details.

This Long-eared Owl spent several months with us as he recovered from severe feather damage, and had to regrow most of his wing feathers. We were finally able to release him last week!!! We can only do this with your help! If you can't make tonight's dinner, see our website for other ways to help. We can't thank you enough for your support!!!

This may look like a bad case of the Mondays, but this little Northern Saw-whet Owl is suffering from head trauma and a sore wing. He was found near a road in downtown Denver, so he probably crashed into something. After a few days on oxygen, meds and good food, he’s looking much brighter. We’ll continue providing our best care in the hope he can return to the wild soon!

July brought us an onslaught of very sick fledgling Cooper’s Hawks, many starving, dehydrated and suffering from West Nile Virus. After an extremely busy and difficult month, we are heartened as we get to move the survivors to our flight cages to continue their recovery and regain strength for release.

This female American Kestrel came to us in early January. Someone heard her hit their glass sliding door and found her unconscious. Thankfully they brought her to Birds of Prey Foundation right away. She suffered significant head trauma and spent her first week receiving oxygen, anti-inflammatory medications and lots of nutritious food. After recovering in our ICU, she joined our other kestrel patients in the large outdoor flight enclosure, where she continues to eat and gain the strength she needs for release!
