We are getting busy! Even our foster mamas have their hands full this time of year! All of the young Great Horned Owls we’ve admitted this spring are in an outdoor flight cage with an adult who is showing them the ropes. Our resident Red-tailed Hawk was paired with a nestling, who has grown a lot since she came into our care!

These two, slightly older baby Great Horned Owls are approximately 3-4 weeks old. 🥰

Our first, second and third baby Great Horned Owls of the season arrived within 18 hours of one another, starting Wednesday evening. This little one fell from its nest in a spruce tree. We estimate s/he is 5 or 6 days old. Hobbies include eating, sleeping and growing. Here s/he is snuggled up in our temperature-controlled brooder.

This Great Horned Owl was shot in the head with a BB. He is recovering from an eye injury and fracture from being shot. Most often, when we admit birds of prey that have been shot, it has been done with BB guns and pellet guns. Anyone caught harming or killing a bird of prey faces fines and possible jail time.

These two don’t know it yet, but they are cleared for release as soon as the snow melts! We like to make sure it is as easy as it can be for them to hunt upon release. Birds of Prey Foundation is beyond grateful for the support of our extended community as we work to return injured raptors to the wild! Thank you so much and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Every summer, the young Swainson’s Hawks amaze and delight us with their combination of toughness and goofiness. This little guy was well enough to move from our ICU to an outdoor flight cage today. If all goes well, he will join a kettle of other youngsters and they will fly to Argentina together in the fall! In the meantime, they are all eating a ton of food to ready themselves for migration.

It’s officially summer at Birds of Prey - we received our first baby Cooper’s Hawk of the year over the weekend! He/she joins many other fledglings in our care, including Great Horned Owls, Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels and a few Common Ravens. They are all keeping us very busy!

This formidable fledgling Great Horned Owl fell out of its nest in early March, when it was only a few days old. We paired it with our foster mama owl as soon as he got strong enough to hold his head up on his own. Now the two are out in an outdoor flight cage, which has a custom set-up for baby owls. They will soon be joined by the rest of the Great Horned Owl babies we’ve received for care until they are all old enough for release.
