Wait, that’s not a turkey! On Nov. 1st, we received the first Green Heron that our organization has ever treated. He/she will be spending the winter in rehab because they are migratory and thus not releasable until spring. We are thankful for your continued support which enables us to take care of all the birds that come through our door!!! Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the Birds of Prey Foundation!

With fall approaching, we are busy evaluating and releasing healed birds back into the wild! Over the past four weeks we’ve had the privilege of releasing 85 birds into the wild, including Swanson’s, Red-tailed, and Cooper’s Hawks; Great Horned, N. Saw -whet and N. Pygmy Owls; a Prairie Falcon, American Kestrels, a pelican and 2 Turkey Vultures!

It has been a busy summer with 247 birds admitted in 45 days, from American Kestrels, Osprey, Swainson's Hawks, Turkey Vultures, and everything in between. They have been hit by cars, tangled in fishing line, are sick with West Nile Virus, and more. So many birds in such a short amount of time have stretched the budget thin with the increased cost of medical care and food.
Can you help us get through this difficult time? Any amount helps!

Summer is bird-nado season in raptor rehab!! We have received 92 birds in the last two weeks. That’s 15% of our annual volume and is typical for this time of year. We are seeing mostly sick and injured Cooper’s Hawk and Red-tailed Hawk fledglings, but today we got this young Burrowing Owl, who got caught in a barbed wire fence. Amazingly his wing is mostly intact, despite some bad wounds. Our fingers are crossed he can make a full recovery , but he’s got a lot of healing to do!

We are getting busy! Even our foster mamas have their hands full this time of year! All of the young Great Horned Owls we’ve admitted this spring are in an outdoor flight cage with an adult who is showing them the ropes. Our resident Red-tailed Hawk was paired with a nestling, who has grown a lot since she came into our care!

These two, slightly older baby Great Horned Owls are approximately 3-4 weeks old. 🥰

Our first, second and third baby Great Horned Owls of the season arrived within 18 hours of one another, starting Wednesday evening. This little one fell from its nest in a spruce tree. We estimate s/he is 5 or 6 days old. Hobbies include eating, sleeping and growing. Here s/he is snuggled up in our temperature-controlled brooder.

This Great Horned Owl was shot in the head with a BB. He is recovering from an eye injury and fracture from being shot. Most often, when we admit birds of prey that have been shot, it has been done with BB guns and pellet guns. Anyone caught harming or killing a bird of prey faces fines and possible jail time.
Help our mission of returning these birds to the wild where they belong!
