What's a +CER?
Bea's happy feelings (+CER) about the grooming dryer are so strong the second she hears the dryer she comes running!
CER = Conditioned Emotional Response -- in this case a happy (+) one resulting from Classical Conditioning procedures with the grooming dryer.
This occurs when Event A (in this case, the grooming dryer turning on) reliably predicts Event B (in this case eating treats) and is observable when Event A alone eventually triggers a happy, anticipatory response in the animal.
This is how we create happy feelings in dogs about all kinds of things that run a high risk of scaring them later on without early interventions and is the biggest part of what puppy socialization is. It's also a hell of a lot faster when the dog hasn't established negative opinions about Events yet because it affords us the opportunity to rapidly convince them from the jump that it's something to look forward to as it predicts good outcomes.
Heads up: there are dogs barking in this clip, but you can see the +CER with out without sound!
Piggy backing off our previous post, let's talk long haired dogs: With high maintenance coats we've really got to consider the grooming process in our socialization endeavors. Both of these dogs started ~10ft away and we're on the home stretch on comfort with the grooming dryer.
