Zoosiana

Zoosiana is where the good times ROAR! A 45-acre zoological park delivering wild family fun. Zoosiana has been a staple for family fun in Acadiana for 30 years!

Stretching across 42 acres, Zoosiana offers the spirit of adventure right here at home. Stroll along the bamboo-shaded pathways to see and learn about amazing animals like giraffes, lions, birds, reptiles, tigers, monkeys, and of course, alligators! Fun for the whole family, explore more from the Safari Express Train, go wild on the Jungle Lodge Playground, and find new treasures at the Gem Mine.

Open 9 am to 5 pm daily, weather permitting. Conveniently located at the intersection of Highway 90 and Ambassador Caffery Parkway in Broussard, Louisiana. For more than 30 years, the communities throughout the Acadiana and southwest Louisiana areas have cherished and grown with the zoo. From humble beginnings as a small menagerie in the early 1990s to today’s accredited zoological park, Zoosiana – Zoo of Acadiana continues to proudly connect guests to the natural world through a strong commitment to education, conservation, and up-close-and-personal, pure excitement. Zoosiana employs about 25 people and provides daily care to all of its animals. The numerous education programs demonstrate the importance of the world’s animals and show that everyone can do a small part to help make the world a better place that will continue to include animals.

𝗭𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗣𝘆𝗴𝗺𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀: 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗲!

Zoosiana is thrilled to announce the arrival of two remarkable new residents: Bella and Noche, a pair of pygmy hippos – the latest addition to the zoo’s family! Known for their charming personalities and unique characteristics, Bella and Noche are sure to capture the hearts of guests of all ages.

Pygmy hippos are rare and fascinating creatures, with fewer than 3,000 estimated to remain in native habitats. Smaller and more elusive than their larger relatives, pygmy hippos primarily inhabit the dense forests and swamps of West Africa. Unlike the common hippopotamus, which is social and semi-aquatic, pygmy hippos are generally solitary and spend most of their time foraging on land, venturing to the water for cooling off, hydration, and hiding from predators.

“This has been an incredible year for the Zoosiana family,” comments Zoosiana Director Matt Oldenburg. “Cheetahs are here for the first time in the zoo’s history, and now these adorable pygmy hippos are, too! This latest project is a testament to our long-term commitment of maintaining a quality, first class zoological experience for our guests and members – one that is built on top quality animal care programs and fostering connections between animals and our guests. We are the stewards of these wonderful, incredible animals on behalf of the children of Acadiana.”

Through its nationally recognized accreditation, Zoosiana partners and collaborates with other institutions on breeding program efforts and conservation-based education initiatives. Each coming from fellow accredited facilities, Bella (3yo) joins the zoo from Florida, while Noche (2yo) comes from Arizona.

“The Animal Care Team is super excited to welcome these hippos,” says Zoosiana Pygmy Hippo Program Coordinator and Lead Keeper Paige Fruge. “They have some fun personalities, and I did not expect to have the connection with them that I have already built in a few short weeks. I fully expect our guests will fall in love with them as quickly as we have!”

“As we have with so many other species, we are looking forward to celebrating the births of healthy hippo calves in the years to come,” says Oldenburg.
