Please sign up for the Pet Desk app for an easy way to communicate with us, request medication refills, schedule or cancel appointments, or access your pets' records. You can use the QR code below or just download the Pet Desk app in the App Store (on iphones) or Google Play (on androids) and sign in with the email you have on file with us.

To request refills you now have two EASY options! Request through the Pet Desk app by pulling up your pet's prescriptions and clicking the refill button OR call the clinic and choose the option to refill a prescription and leave us a message on our refill line 😀 You can send a text without using the app but this may cause a slight delay in refilling your prescription as we receive A LOT of texts each day.

Thank you so much for your support and loyalty as we continue to update and streamline our processes at the hospital!! 💚💚

We want to update you on some scheduling changes here at Westwood. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we have been working to bring in additional veterinarians to be able to serve you and your pets with the standard of care you have come to expect from us over the years. Our plan moving forward is to utilize several experienced and vetted clinicians to fill relief shifts focusing on wellness and sick appointments – as we continue to work toward finding permanent veterinarians to bring into our hospital.

Dr. Dana Watkins will continue to see patients for wellness and sick appointments, as well as performing surgery one day per week. Dr. Darren Steele will be transitioning to a full-time surgery schedule, to help manage the volume of surgical and dental procedures needed by our patients and to fulfill his career long ambition of focusing fully on anesthetic procedures. We are very excited to help him accomplish this goal and hope you will join us in celebrating his achievements.

While we know this will be a change for many of you who have been loyal, longtime clients of Dr. Steele’s over the years, we can assure you that your pets are in great hands and we will continue to strive for the level of care and compassion you have experienced for the last 45 years from our hospital. Thank you for being on this journey with us and for your continued support!

Sincerely,

The Team at Westwood Hospital for Animals

We currently have two full-time veterinarians, Dr. Steele and Dr. Watkins, and are doing everything we can to accommodate appointment requests. Thank you for your patience as we navigate this change! We will have relief veterinarians filling in as often as possible starting at the end of January.

We now have drop off appointments available daily, along with emergency/sick appointments, but these are limited and usually fill up quickly. We will do our best to find the best alternative for you and your furry friends if we do not have availability when needed. If your pet is due for its annual exam and vaccines in the next few months, please contact us now to schedule, as wellness visits are scheduling out to 8 weeks at this time.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support! We will continue to offer options and find solutions so that your pets receive the care they need while maintaining the level of treatment and service we have been able to give for the last 45+ years 🐕‍🦺🐈💚

We are receiving a lot of questions about the current mystery canine respiratory illness that is being covered in the news. While there is still little known about this illness, we wanted to share what we do know so far.

What is it and what are the symptoms?
The current illness presents similarly to kennel cough but can last much longer. Symptoms include coughing, fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, labored breathing, and discharge from the eyes or nose. It can worsen quickly and can progress to severe pneumonia.

What should dog owners do if they suspect their dog has this illness?
Owners should monitor their dog(s) for signs of illness. If you notice a persistent cough, it is best to have your pet evaluated by a veterinarian or call for guidance to see if the signs are consistent with this infection or some other illness or developing condition such as pneumonia or cardiac disease. Your veterinarian can work on a course of treatment or refer more severe cases to an emergency or specialty clinic.

What testing is available to diagnose this illness?
Although there is no testing currently available to diagnose this illness, veterinary laboratories in four states are investigating the illness from samples of affected dogs. New Hampshire’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies say they have used genetic sequencing and have discovered a previously unknown germ. They are calling the pathogen “a funky bacterium”. It is reportedly smaller than a normal bacterium in size making it harder to find and sequence.

What precautions should dog owners take at this time?
This illness is very contagious. The best way for people to protect their dogs is to avoid highly populated areas with exposure to other dogs. Dogs that frequent dog parks, doggy daycare, boarding, and grooming facilities are currently more at risk than dogs that are isolated from other canines. Dogs that are sick should be isolated from other dogs. Senior dogs, those with chronic illnesses, and those with weakened immune systems should also take extra precautions.

Should dog owners keep routine veterinary appointments and specialty appointments?
Since veterinary teams, including our team at Westwood Hospital for Animals, see patients who are contagious and those who are immunocompromised, we take extra precautions with our patients to avoid the risk of exposure. With this illness circulating, it is more important than ever for dogs to be up-to-date on their vaccines and wellness exams so please move forward with scheduled appointments.

Is there a cure or vaccine?
Currently, there is no treatment for this disease and vaccines are not available. However, dog owners should keep their pets up-to-date with vaccines for Influenza and Bordetella (kennel cough).

Are other animals at risk?
While this illness is highly contagious for other dogs, there is no current evidence that it is transmissible to humans and other species.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.

Calling all fur-bulous pet parents! Let's paws for a moment to share some useful tips to keep our furry friends safe this fall season:
1️⃣ "Leaf" the toxic plants alone. 🌿 Some plants (and mushrooms) can be dangerous if ingested. 🍂

2️⃣ Candles are a great fall addition to your home. However, a knocked-over candle by a curious pet leads to trouble. 🕯️

3️⃣ Outdoor walks are paw-some, but stick to open areas and keep your pets secured on a leash to avoid harm's way. 🐾
