The holidays are a great time for decorating and festive cooking, so don't have the fun cut short with a trip to the vet. Many holiday foods and decorations can be harmful or toxic to pets if they ingest them. Certain holiday plants, like mistletoe, can also be hazardous for your pets.

As our beloved pets grow older, their needs change. Caring for senior pets means providing them with the special attention they deserve. Ensure they have a balanced diet tailored for seniors, rich in joint-supporting nutrients like glucosamine and chondroitin, and keep an eye on their weight—obesity can worsen age-related conditions, and sudden weight loss could signal health concerns. Let’s make their golden years as comfortable as possible!

Pet Health Tip for Cat Owners: Did you know that having enough litter boxes can improve your cat’s wellbeing?

It’s recommended to have one litter box per cat, plus one extra. For example, a one-cat household should have at least two litter boxes, while a two-cat household should have at least three.

This simple step helps promote good litter box habits, reduces the chances of urine marking, and even lowers the risk of urinary tract infections!

With the heat index over 100 degrees, we wanted to remind everyone that heatstroke in dogs is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Here are some key points:

Understanding Heatstroke: Heatstroke occurs when a dog’s body temperature rises above 105°F (40.5°C). Dogs primarily cool themselves through panting, but this can be insufficient in hot and humid conditions12.
Signs and Symptoms: Early signs include heavy panting, rapid breathing, excessive drooling, and bright red gums. As the condition worsens, symptoms can escalate to lethargy, muscle tremors, and even collapse2.
Risk Factors: Certain breeds, such as brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs, and dogs that are very young, old, overweight, or have underlying health conditions are more susceptible2.
Prevention and Treatment: Preventive measures include avoiding strenuous exercise in hot weather, providing plenty of water, and ensuring access to shade. If heatstroke is suspected, immediate cooling with cool (not cold) water and seeking veterinary care is crucial12.
For more detailed information, you can check out articles from Today’s Veterinary Practice1 and the American Kennel Club2.
