Happy Summer☀️! Here are a few tips to keep your pets healthy this summer:

1. To prevent your dog from overheating, exercise them during the cool hours of the early morning or late evening. To avoid dehydration, provide your pets with water while they are outside.

2. Make sure that your pet’s vaccinations are up to date! Parvovirus, an illness that thrives in hot weather, can be fatal to dogs that have not received vaccinations.

3. If your dog has not been tested for heartworm this year, visit your Veterinarian for a check up.

4. Make sure you are up to date on flea and tick prevention medication!

Table Scraps Can Be Harmful to Pets!
Common ingredients, spices, and fat content can make your pet ill, leading to gastrointestinal distress as well as obesity.

Curb your pet's begging habit during dinner by crating or separating them from the dining area with a dog-friendly treat for mental stimulation instead of human food. 🐾

April is National Heartworm Awareness in Dogs Month!

What is Heartworm Disease?

Heartworm disease is caused by parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs and surrounding blood vessels of affected pets. Heartworms cause lung disease, heart failure and will damage other organs throughout the body.

________________________________________________________________

Did you know?

The dog is the natural host for heartworms. But, cats and ferrets also are often infected. Heartworms are even commonly found to infect wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions and (in very rare instances) humans.
________________________________________________________________

Did you know?

Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in ALL 50 states (even Alaska)! Pet’s need annual heartworm testing to ensure that a prevention program is working. While heartworm preventions are highly effective, no medication is 100%. If you miss a dose of monthly medication – or give it late, you leave your pet unprotected.

Wondering how heartworm disease is spread?

Adult worms living in a host (your dog, cat, or even local wildlife such as foxes) make “baby-worms” called microfilaria. These microfilaria circulate in the blood stream until they are picked up by a feeding mosquito. Inside the mosquito the microfilaria develop into larvae. This larvae is then transmitted to your unaffected pet where they develop into adult heartworms
________________________________________________________________

Many dogs show no symptoms of heartworm disease in the early stages of infection. The earlier heartworm disease is detected, the better chance your pet will recover. Signs of advanced heartworm disease in your dog include coughing, lack of appetite, fatigue and weight loss. A severely infected pet may progress in symptoms of heart failure or caval syndrome (a sudden life-threatening blockage of blood flow in the heart). Call today to make sure your pet is up to date with their heartworm test!

This Easter remember to just say no to Easter grass. While it can make Easter baskets fun & festive, it can also be dangerous to our pets if eaten. Try fun tissue paper instead!

Did you know?
Easter Lillies are toxic to cats. These pretty flowers make a temping chew toy for many cats, but can cause vomiting and lethargy if ingested. Keep any Easter Lillies where your cats cannot get to them, and if you suspect your kitty has made one a snack, be sure to call us right away.
________________________________________

Keep track of where you hide your Easter eggs & pick up any undiscovered ones after the hunt. This will prevent your pooch from making a snack out of any leftover eggs days later.

This Easter, remember to keep your chocolate bunnies somewhere your dog can’t make a snack out of them! Give us a call with any concerns that your pet may have gotten into something they shouldn’t.

March
General Pet Safety Tips (Spring)

Like us, pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens. Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause itching, minor sniffling and sneezing, or life-threatening anaphylactic shock to insect bites and stings. If you suspect your pet has a springtime allergy, please visit your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Do you have an emergency plan in place for your pet?
Unfortunately, accidents do happen. That’s why it’s crucial to have an emergency plan in place—before you need it.
Talk to our veterinarian about establishing an emergency protocol for your pet!

Table Scraps Can Be Harmful to Pets:
Table scraps from dinner can be bad for your pet. The ingredients, spices, and fat content can make your pet ill, upset their stomach, or cause other problems such as obesity. If your dog does beg, you may need to crate your dog during dinner or have him hang out in another room with a toy to distract him.

Cats need extra attention
According to Dr. Marcus Brown, president-elect of the American Association of Feline Practitioners "Cats are very good at hiding diseases, so it's challenging to know when yours is sick. Subtle changes such as weight loss, eating less, not greeting you at the door or peeing outside the litter box are significant with cats, and should prompt a call to your veterinarian," he says.

Be proactive about flea control.
Even if you don’t spot fleas on your pet, it can just take one to send your pet into a scratching fit. If your pet is itching, biting or scratching, there is a good chance it is because of fleas.
Thankfully, the fix is easy: Year-round flea control on all your pets is what’s needed. Talk to our veterinarian on the right flea protocol for your pet!

Ever wonder…
Can I use dog flea products on my cats?

No! Ingredients in many flea products labeled for dogs can be harmful or fatal to your cat. An example of this is the ingredient permethrin. Products containing permethrin, or any product labeled "for dogs only" should NEVER be used on cats. Cats are very sensitive and metabolize things differently. Using these products on cats can have disastrous consequences.

Wondering when you should apply flea prevention to your pet?

The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CPAC) recommends all dogs and cats should be treated year-round and throughout their life with flea control products to limit infestations on the pet and prevent establishment of flea populations in the home. When it comes to fleas, prevention is the key! Controlling and eliminating an already existing flea problem takes a lot of time and effort.

Not warming up quickly enough for you? Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet. Don’t leave your pet outdoors, they can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. Also, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.
