Important information you may not know about fleas and ticks!⬇️

•Fleas are the most common external parasite for our four-legged friends. They are wingless insects that feed on blood, can jump up to two feet high and are persistent in the environment. They can live for as few as 13 days or as long as 12 months, and during their lifespan they can produce millions of offspring.
•Ticks are parasites that feed on blood and can plague our dogs and cats. Though their presence may not be noticeable, ticks can transmit many diseases through their bite. Ticks tend to be most active in late spring and summer, but species and disease transmission can vary based on where you live.

Full article located here: https://www.aspca.org/news/your-guide-preparing-flea-and-tick-season

•Once an animal has an infestation of fleas or ticks, it takes months of continual flea/tick preventative use to control this issue and stop their life cycles. Luckily, there are many options available to prevent fleas and ticks from transmitting diseases! Here at BVC we offer an oral monthly preventative for fleas and ticks, called Credelio. Or we do have topical products available on our online pharmacy: https://brownstownveterinaryclinic.covetruspharmacy.com/

*These are prescription medications, if you are not a current client with your pets, then we cannot prescribe these for your pets.*
**It is very important not to use products on your cat that are intended for dogs**

If interested in learning which product is best for your fur-friends, give us a call or be sure to ask during your pets yearly checkup!

‼️Attention Dairy Cattle Farmers‼️

Due to the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cattle, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are requiring that prior to interstate movement, all dairy cattle are required to receive a negative test for Influenza A virus from an approved National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) laboratory.

According to the Indiana State Board of Animal Health:
•There have not been any cases identified in Indiana.
•Any cattle owner in Indiana who notices clinical signs consistent with this illness should contact their veterinarian.
•As always, producers are encouraged to practice good biosecurity when moving on/off and between farms.

If this applies to you or if you have questions please give us a call 812-358-2947.

Important information you may not know about heartworm disease!⬇️

Heartworms can only be transmitted from animal to animal by mosquitoes. When a mosquito bites an infected animal, young heartworms called microfilariae enter into that mosquito's system. Within two weeks, the microfilariae develop into infective larvae inside the mosquito; these infective larvae can be transmitted to another animal when this mosquito takes its next blood meal/bites an animal. Mosquitoes are always around, they can be indoors and outdoors at anytime, and dogs can test positive for heartworms year round. (Yes, even in the winter😲)

Full article located here: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/heartworm-disease

Once an animal tests positive for heartworms, the treatment is very expensive, but luckily there are many options available to prevent this deadly disease! Here at BVC we offer oral preventatives called Interceptor Plus and Simparica Trio, which are given once a month, and we also have an injection called Proheart-12 which will protect your dog from heartworms for 12 months!
(These are prescription medications, if you are not a current client with your pets, then we cannot sell these over the counter. We also offer more preventative options at our online pharmacy).

If interested in learning which product is best for your fur-friends, give us a call or be sure to ask during your pets yearly checkup!
