the starry spur is taking a summer hiatus from lessons, as i pursue another horse-related opportunity to grow in both knowledge and experience. the lesson schedule will open again on october 1st, 2024.

well, i guess it’s finally time to announce my summer plans! 🐴🌾

last week was my first full week up in minocqua. i will be living up here through the end of september, working with the herd and leading group trail rides at holiday acres. i already love it and have learned SO much from the owners, trail guides, and horses themselves.

what does this mean for starry spur? this means i’ll be taking a break from giving lessons in lomira, while i grow in experience with different horses and a part of the business that i’m interested in providing one day. the lesson schedule in lomira will open up again on october 1st, 2024!

thank you to all of my lesson families that continue to understand and support my dreams. boogs and i can’t wait to see you in fall! in the meantime, looking forward to a summer filled with horse girl shenanigans. ✨

ok firstly, this is a josie appreciation post. 🥹🫶🏻 whenever this girl and her mom are at the barn, my day is 10x better. boogs and i are obsessed with you!

secondly, hi! talk about an unplanned hiatus from socials lol. 😵‍💫 i figured it’s finally time to catch up! life has done anything but slow down since i last posted, and it’s definitely a little different. most notably, my family shrunk by two. i ended up selling hyde to an amazing lady and better fit for a home. and i had to send my best friend and golden retriever pup, margie, to doggie heaven. thank you to all of the lesson student families that were flexible and understanding throughout marge’s struggles. no longer having hyde and marge around hasn’t been easy, but boogs, lady, and the chickens are still a handful lol. i also experienced some serious health scares myself. BUT!

the starry spur hasn’t slowed down either! truly giddy up vibes going on over here. 🤠 boogs and i are working with 25 to 30 regular students now! we are humbled and grateful. but it’s been a grind lately, amidst springtime events and other exciting opportunities in the works.

i think that’s it from me for now! hope everyone else is staying healthy and happy. more starry spur updates coming soon. 🤎

howdy hey!!

a few lesson students and their families have expressed wanting to see a rodeo or some live barrel racing. i shared these somewhat local events with them and figured i would share them here as well. just in case anyone else was looking or interested! 🤎

bulls, bands, & barrels - coming back to madison (alliant energy center) on february 24th! as the name suggests, this includes bull riding, live bands, and barrel racing. the concert artists are ian munsick and alexandra kay. i went to one last fall in madison, and the bulls and barrels were followed by the concert. they opened up the arena, so you could stay in your seat or rush down and stand in a GA pit if you wanted to.

midwest horse fair rodeo - midwest horse fair in itself is a great event to attend, and they will have a rodeo both nights of that weekend. this rodeo is an actual prca rodeo, with the seven standard rodeo events - ba****ck riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. mhf runs april 19th to 21st in madison (alliant energy center), having a rodeo the night of april 19th and 20th. these tickets go quite fast, but there is still some availability in the 300 level on the 19th.

these are the events i suggest this spring, because they have some diversity of events. there is also a pbr bull riding stop in milwaukee (fiserv forum) on march 10th, and we will have a number of rice bull riding company’s bulls & barrels at county fairs come summer. message me if you have any questions or need help getting tickets! 🤠

bo**er man 🤎

i’ve had boogs for 15 (going on 16) years. the way time has flown actually terrifies me, but this horse is my heart. there isn’t another i would have rather spent the last decade and a half with.

he was a gift from my family after my mom was officially granted full custody of me. horses were my life growing up, but something i predominantly did with my biological father. so although it was super out of my mom’s comfort zone, she knew i couldn’t go without horses in my life. *enter boogs*

he was for me to run barrels with, but it actually took me a few years to travel with him. other than him coming with two speeds (all out or walk lol), the reason for the delay was me. it was difficult to heal from things that went down with my bio dad, much less move forward with horses and rodeo. simultaneously, my mom was busy raising three young kids and didn’t know this level of the horse world. so with my delay and the uncertainty, i missed my high school rodeo window. not finding a way through that time and making it happen might be one of the biggest regrets of my life, but the emotional maturity wasn’t there yet everyone haha. i still had some great times running in local fun shows, jackpots, 4-H, nbha, and bulls & barrels.

he’s been there through the best of times and the worst of times. being kept by my barrel racing bff emily during undergrad, being leased by 𝓗𝔂𝓷𝓵𝓮𝔂 𝓢𝓪𝓵𝓽𝓮𝓻 during law school and my masters, coming back to one of our farms, and now here. carrying kids on his back and supporting their growth and crazy dreams, while continuing to do the same for me.

alright sorry this one got sappy. but i want y’all to know a bit more of his story! and i’m working on being more serious lol. long story short, you won’t regret taking lessons on this guy. 🫶🏻

riding lessons are for all ages and experience levels! all lessons are one-on-one. i provide the horse, arena, and all equipment other than a riding helmet, if required. a riding helmet is required for students 10 years old and younger.

✨ 30-minute lesson - $30
✨ 1-hour lesson - $50

💫 monday-thursday - 9am-9pm
💫 friday - 9am-4pm
💫 saturday - 11am-4pm

facebook versus reality with my lil’ lady 😂😭

when i signed the christmas post with all my horse children, i figured it was time for lady to make her formal debut to the timeline. lady is a miniature horse that joined the family in october. 🫶🏻 she stays at the farm i live on, so she actually hasn’t met her two brothers yet. truly the sassy little sister. can’t wait for that day lol.

she also was a rescue two owners ago, and the best guess of her birthday is december 2013. with the help of Emma Menzer and Riley Menzer, we decided her birthday is december 20th. so miss lady just had her 10th birthday! happy belated to my little furball princess. 💅🏼

evening, y’all! 🤠

yes, i’ve been kinda missing in action this month. between holiday activities, fighting a tireless sickness, managing a new regimen for my pup, feeding my new sourdough starter, watching all events of the national finals rodeo (not just barrel racing like usual lol), and the start of my brother’s varsity basketball season… my posting has been quite non-existent.

i am looking forward to getting my groove back, while at least the sickness part has seemed to subside. 🙌🏻 so here’s a picture from my first offsite trail ride with hyde a few weeks ago! 🤎

kinsley is serving nothing but giddy up vibes!! 🤩

we’ve had a packed last few days of lessons, and this girl was the perfect way to end the weekend!

in 3 short weeks, she has grown an incredible amount. today was her first day holding her own reins, but she decided she was trotting by herself!! she blows me away with her eagerness to learn, cowgirl courage, and potential. 💫

tomorrow is her seventh birthday, so bo**er and i are sending you early birthday wishes! we are so thankful you’ve come into our lives. 🧡

last week’s recap! 🧡

week one of lessons was maybe the best week of my life. boogs and i had 7 different students - some familiar friends and some new friends! all different ages, experience, and confidence levels. it was a week of learning, for both them and me!!

to be honest, i was nervous about starting the lessons themselves. some people have a passion they’re gifted at, but they aren’t able to teach or communicate in an effective way. (my brother, logan, trying to teach me how to golf for instance. 😂)

but this horse led me. just like he has the past 15 years. i’ve never been more proud to own him than i was this past week. he is patient, gentle, loving, and knows how to calm students. and me. he’s truly one in a million, and i’m so freaking lucky. 🫶🏻

safety first! 🧡

riding helmets are required for all lesson riders that are 10 years old or younger. the starry spur aims to balance safety and cowboy values. 🤠 so, if over the age of 10, it will be the parent, legal guardian, or rider’s choice. it is also the only piece of equipment that lesson riders need to bring to lessons, if applicable!

these are some of the only photos that exist of me in a helmet tbh. 😂 a cowboy hat is definitely my headwear of choice, but helmets can be cool too!

the boys and i are super lucky to work with dr. mark from Waupun Veterinary Service LLP! not only does he do common equine vet things, but he serves as the boys’ dentist and chiropractor too. talk about a triple threat! 🤌🏻🙌🏻 he calms all of us during his visits and knows what the heck he’s talking about!

last week both bo**er and hyde had chiro done, and boogs was also checked over a little extra. he has been having a varied cough over the past two weeks, which is definitely out of the norm for him. BUT his lungs sounded great, and i am just keeping an eye and ear on it for the near future. special thanks to Bre Buerger for always doing so as well.

and now, i’ll be adding my new miniature horse, lady, to dr. mark’s visit list! 😂🤎

wanted to introduce myself and provide some comedic relief. believe 👏🏻 in 👏🏻 the 👏🏻 glow 👏🏻 up 👏🏻 people!

my name is sierra, and i am the sole owner and riding instructor of the starry spur. going to keep this short and sweet for now by telling you 3 quick horsie facts about me!

💫 i’ve been riding since i was 3 years old! i started with lessons and showing in western leadline classes.
💫 i switched gears around age 7 to the “cool” stuff… barrel racing! i actually was convinced to do my first rodeo at age 8 by our farrier at the time, clint.
💫 my worst fall was in high school, when i fractured 8 bones in my face. Travis Senn got to watch that one and my refusal to cry lol.
