I am a leader.
She expects me to be who she needs me to be.
Anything less, and she will not believe me.

I am also a follower.
I trust in her judgement and I listen to her.

I am a teacher.
It is my job to teach her the ways
To give her the knowledge and skills she will need all of her days

I am sometimes a therapist.
I am herā€™s and she is mine
Together, we will be fine

I am an artist.
I communicate and mold with her each day
She becomes a work of art I create in every way

I am a psychologist.
I understand her when no one else can
I better myself, so I can better understand

I am sometimes a medic.
When she is hurt, I will be there to heal
To provide for each wound, each need and every meal

I am a facilities manager.
I put blood, sweat and tears into her home
To give her the best life I can, she will never be on her own.

I am constantly reminded to stay humble and kind.
If I do not remember, she will help me
If she does not, the judge will make sure I see.

I am an addict.
My heart beats for my next fix.
I cannot live without my perfect mix.

I am an equestrian, my life is devoted to the horse and everything she and I can offer the world together.
Partners for life, I can conquer anything with her!

In 2003, I got my horse.
I was 10 years old, she was 6. I had very limited horse experience, as did my parents, and she was not broke and was also bred. I didnā€™t know anything, we could have sold her. But we didnā€™t.

In 2004, I was 11 years old, and my mare gave birth. If I wasnā€™t in over my head already, I definitely was nowā€¦ Trying to teach my mare to ride and her baby how to leadā€¦ It was so dangerous! I could have given up and sold them both that yearā€¦ but I didnā€™t.

In 2005, I had so many rope burns from that c**tā€¦ He was strong and flighty. My mare would do nothing but trot on our ridesā€¦ Barn sour and opinionated, we butted heads a lot. Most would have sold them that year. But I didnā€™t.

In 2006, I was 13 years old. I started doing 4-H and so badly wanted to show my horse! I had no lessons, no idea what I was doing, but I could now at least canter her most days! If I could just get her in the trailer!!! She would not load!!! At least her two year old c**t could lead nowā€¦ My first year at county fair, we made a fool of ourselvesā€¦ But I didnā€™t sell her.

In 2007, I had mustered enough courage to ride the c**t. He could have ruined me. He was strong and spooky, but he took care of me. As long as we were near his momā€¦ She was my go-to trail partner and we rode miles almost everyday the weather allowed! We probably could have sold the c**tā€¦ but we didnā€™t.

In 2008, when I was 15 years old, I finally won a 4th place ribbon at the county fair in Halter with my mare! I could also now ride the c**t down the road by himself a ways without him acting (too) stupid! Looking behind, weā€™ve come pretty far! Looking ahead, were my high school yearsā€¦ I should sell them both. Iā€™ll be too busyā€¦ but I didnā€™t.

From 2009 to 2011ā€¦ High school was filled with a lot of the typical high school stuffā€¦ Boys, extracurricular activities, what classes should I take? Prom? Friday night football games? College??? I donā€™t think the horses minded the back burner too much, but I missed them. They remained my most stable friends. When college came aroundā€¦ I still decided to keep them.

2012 to 2015, I worked my life around them. I moved and went to college where they could still be near me. I worked 3 jobs to pay their board, go to school full time and earn my degrees. I learned so much about training and competing! I found my calling! Together, we earned ribbons, trophies, buckles, points and money! I found myself because I kept my horses!

In 2016, I got pregnant and carried my son to full term, just to have no choice but to give him back to Godā€¦ I was destroyed. I was broken. My husband cheated on me. I felt I had nothing left. But I had my horsesā€¦

In 2017, my daughter saved my life. A true gift from God, she showed me I did have a reason to live again, and so I did. I was learning to live again, rather than just survive. I found enjoyment with my horses again.

In 2018, we had the opportunity to move 800 miles south to Kentucky. I had to move everything on my farm and everything in my house. Selling the horses probably wouldā€™ve made things a lot easierā€¦ but they were my family. I moved the horses.

In 2019, I got a divorce and met my current husband. I had a farm to fix up and had to find a job. I had no time for my horses, I had a two-year-old daughter to care for as wellā€¦ But theyā€™re still going to be there when I need them. So I kept them.

2020ā€¦ Need I say more? The world went crazyā€¦ The horse market skyrocketed! Horses were selling for incredibly high prices! I could have sold, being in the horse business, I knew it would be a smart business moveā€¦ But theyā€™d done more for me than any amount of money could ever buy! So they stayed!

2021 to Current, Life has never been sweeter. My horses helped me through so many rough times. Even in times where holding onto them made my life more complicated, even when learning and continuing my training goals made things frustrating, even when I felt bad for letting them sit, even when I could have made some much-needed money off themā€¦ I bought and sold others, but I kept MY horses. I kept the ones that had my heart, they owned it, and I could never rip it away from them. They gave me so much more than theyā€™ll ever understand, theyā€™re horsesā€¦ Yet, I know they understandā€¦ Because they are horses!

As a parent, I donā€™t know who she will be as an adult... I honestly donā€™t want to think about it yet. Sheā€™s growing up too fast.

I do know she will be raised with the horses. The lessons they teach her will be far more valuable than anything I could teach her.

Do you want to ride? Youā€™ve got to earn the right. Do you want to hang out with friends? Not until youā€™re chores are done. You failed at something? Better get back up and try again. Not sure how to do something? I bet we can figure it out. Not sure how to fix something broken? Try a piece of twine.

The horses will teach her how to bleed and sweat for what she wants in life. The horses will teach her patience. The horses will teach her to appreciate everything she has. The horses will teach her how to set goals and then work for them. The horses will teach her to stay humble, and think about those around her.

Even if they are not a permanent part of her life, in a way, they will be.

Old Horse

The world is not kind to old horses whose time of use is past

Their stories and achievements get lost, their stories donā€™t last

No one realizes how much they gave and how hard they worked for their family

Few stop to think about the young horse that lived within, now worn mightily

Now, aged with time and wear, worked and used hard over the years

They still take each day in stride, with willing attitude and few fears

The old horse is worth his weight in gold

But the world isnā€™t always as kind to them, theyā€™ve been bought and theyā€™ve been sold

But true to their nature, theyā€™ve always done their best to stay the course

For the people who really and truly appreciate the wonderful old horse

Rocky Mountain mare in for some training!

Sheā€™s a pretty cool girl!

Canā€™t wait to get to know her better! šŸ„°šŸ“

07/13/2024

Letā€™s be clear here, Iā€™m still her favorite big boy
Iā€™ve been here a lot longer than you and brought her a lot of joy
Sheā€™s my girl, so you better not hurt her
For me, there could never be another
She understands me, and weā€™ve been through a lot
Iā€™m her favorite big boy, the best sheā€™s got
Iā€™ve carried her to victory and held her in her tears
My mane has been her source of comfort for years
So while I will allow you to hold her and love her, letā€™s be clear
Iā€™m her favorite big boy and you better never cause a tear
Youā€™ve gotta be pretty special to earn rights to my girl
She takes good care of me, and I do my best to give her the world
Love her, respect her, be careful with her, sheā€™s not a toy
And donā€™t ever forget.... Iā€™m her favorite big boy!

Love, her Gelding ā¤ļøšŸ“

Courage

There have been so many times Iā€™ve been scared to death to take the next step, take the next breath. Everything Iā€™ve ever wanted was on the other side of fear. It has taken so much courage to get every ounce of where and who I am.

So what is courage? Courage is those moments when your stomach is so full of butterflies you feel sick and pushing through. Courage is when your heart is racing, and you canā€™t think straight, but you can think clearly. Courage is when youā€™re scared and even shaking, and you donā€™t give in. Courage is when youā€™re questioning ā€œWhy am I doing this? Can I quit? Would I be ok with that? Can I run away?ā€ And your answer to yourself is No.

Courage is when no one can help you and you overcome yourself. Inner quarrel. Big situations and small. Great risks and small. Courage is pushing forward up that hill or mountain to see what there is at the top and the other side. Pushing through the fears, rocky trails and occasional land slide.
Courage is stepping into that saddle for the first time. Courage is going into that arena like you own it. Courage is being the role model you want to be. Courage is taking a chance on something, though it may hurt. Courage is being scared to death... and saddling up anyway!

. . . I first met Crystal (later to be named Juniper) when I was a college student at Kirkwood in 2013. We had some good times together and she was one of my favorites! When the horses were being dispersed after the program announced their shutting down, I outbid the Amish to bring her home. I had her for about a year before I let her go to a lesson barn in Minnesota (which then moved to Virginia).

I kept watch over her all these years and it warmed my heart to watch her teach so many people how to ride and many more how to build and rebuild their confidence with horses!

Today, he body has caught up to her and she is being laid to rest in Virginia. She was so well loved and cared for all her life!

Thank you for a job well done, sweet girl! ā¤ļø

Our family had the wonderful opportunity to witness little Halley be born on Wednesday afternoon!

I spend so much time with my mares, especially when they are close to foaling and Glory seemed grateful to have me there with her. She did such an amazing job for her first baby! šŸ„°
