Peekaboo! We finally got a good look at the newest face in the colobus monkey troop. Raising little ones is a job all members of the troop help with and they’ve been doing a great job of keeping baby healthy and hidden.

Colobus monkeys are born with white hair that slowly starts to turn black and white as they get older.
Sneak a peek of the little one at Colobus Crossing the next time you’re here!

We celebrated and with an Animal Play Day for the whole Zoo.

The animals had a blast with their giraffe and flamingo-themed enrichment.
Guests were able to stop by our conservation tables and learn more about these two featured species.

Funds from art sales or donations benefited the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the AZA SAFE Andean Highland Flamingo Program.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support and have a good time with us!

If you missed this event but want to support, check out our story for a link to support conservation efforts.

Here are 3 cool facts about capybaras for !

😎 They are the largest rodents in the world! They stand at about 2 feet tall and their closest relatives are guinea pigs! 📏
😎 Their teeth never stop growing! Grazing on grasses and aquatic plants helps keep their teeth in check.
😎 They love company. Capys live in small herds in the wild. More eyes mean more protection from predators, like jaguars.

Show some love to these cool critters ❤️

The Mexican burrowing toads wondering where all the rain went 👁️👄👁️

This species is housed behind the scenes at the Zoo because they spend a majority of the year underground, hence their name. They only emerge after heavy rains.

The burrowing toad can be found in Mexico and Central America, as well as in a few South Texas counties: Starr, Zapata and Jim Hogg.

When it comes to hurricane season, our staff knows the drill. These past few days, we’ve been getting our ducks in a row in preparation for Beryl.
While we are no longer in Beryl’s direct path, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Best buds 🫶🏽
A gila monster and speckled rattlesnake take a nap under their heat lamp.

This is one of many multi-species habitats you can find at the Zoo.

The geographic range for these two species overlaps in the wild which means they make great roomies. The interactions they have with each other also serve as a form of enrichment.

🚨Noodle Alert🚨
Last week, four Thai bamboo rat snakes hatched behind the scenes at the Herpetarium.

This terrestrial species inhabits forests in southeastern Asia. They live in forests at higher altitudes where the climate is cooler.

The hatchlings will be raised behind the scenes until they are older, but you can see their parents at the Herpetarium on your next visit.

Over the past three months, the Zoo has taken in and been caring for 19 infant Mexican spider monkeys, most of which were seized from smugglers at border crossings by federal agents in South Texas. The smuggling is in direct response to the demand for baby monkeys by the U.S. pet trade.

“We need the public to understand that while these animals may look cute and cuddly, the consequences of acquiring them as pets have far-reaching negative effects,” emphasized Dr. Pat Burchfield, the Zoo’s executive director. “The babies are traumatized by the loss of their mothers. While they can be hand-raised, they can no longer be safely returned to their native habitats. By making them household pets, people are directly contributing to the elimination of this species in the wild and the illegal black market trade of wild animals.”
