The fourth of July is near and what better way to celebrate than with fireworks and sparklers. Although it may not be expected, dogs will chew on and eat fireworks and may become anxious due to the unexpected, loud sound. When ingested dogs can have GI upset, obstruction, and even damage to their red blood cells. It’s best to keep your furry friends inside while enjoying the pyrotechnics!

It is estimated that over 2/3 of dogs over the age of three have periodontal disease, an inflammation or infection of the tissues surrounding the teeth. Periodontal disease starts as gingivitis caused by plaque and often progresses to involve the bony tooth sockets. Left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to painful tooth loss.

When should I brush my dog's teeth?

For many dogs, once brushing becomes a part of their daily routine they will begin to expect and enjoy it. Brushing three times a week is the recommendation to help remove plaque and prevent tartar accumulation.

Whether you hit the gym every day or haven’t dusted off your estranged sneakers in months, you know it’s important to exercise. As you learned in health class, working up a sweat boosts your mood, slims your waistline and, the same is true of dog exercise.

So why do so many of us forget this basic health requirement when it comes to our furry friends? Your dog needs exercise to be their happiest and healthiest selves.

Exercise decreases anxiety in dogs, says Dr. Stephanie Borns-Weil, a veterinarian and clinical instructor at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Pet parents who ensure their pups are physically fit will be less likely to return home to a chewed-up couch.

“Because exercise decreases anxiety overall, lack of exercise can contribute to anxiety-based conditions,” she says. “More specifically, lack of exercise and mental stimulation can lead to attention-seeking and destructive behaviors.”

My name is Savannah, and I am a 26YO Veterinary Technician. I have been working in the vet field for 9YRS now, and I could not imagine working a day in my life not surrounded by animals. I am Fear Free Certified, and a year away from becoming a Licensed Veterinary Technician. I have 2 dogs of my own- Kaiser, a 5YO German Shepherd and Logan, a 2YO Great Dane mix. We regularly enjoy going on off leash nature treks, playing in the park, hiking, and swimming in the Potomac. I also have worked for a large animal vet - so I have experience with farm animal care as well. I have had a dream about starting my own business and I would love to extend my knowledge/training and love for pets outside of the office to help you with your everyday pet needs!
