Heartworm disease is serious—and it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to put your pet at risk. 🦟

Heartworm disease has been found in all 50 states, including northern states like Maine. While heartworm is more prevalent in the southern states due to warmer climates and higher mosquito populations, cases are increasingly being reported in northern areas. Both cats and dogs are at risk.

Heartworm testing is done annually at wellness checkups. By testing every year, veterinarians can catch heartworm infections early, before the worms get the chance to cause long-term damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.

Protect your pet year-round with reliable heartworm prevention! Prevention is an easy (and yummy tasting treat!) that can save their life. We carry perception products in house like Interceptor Plus and Simparica Trio for dogs and Revolution Plus for cats. You can also order other options through our online pharmacy! 💻

Small changes like using biodegradable p**p bags, picking up litter, or donating pet supplies can make a big difference.
Other earth-friendly changes include managing pet waste properly, opting for walking together over driving, and buying eco-friendly dog toys and accessories such as items made with biodegradable and/or recycled materials!

PUPPIES!!

These German Shorthaired Pointers are 6 weeks old and came in today for their first physicals and vaccines with Dr. Ellithorpe! They received their first DHPP vaccine (protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvo) and a dewormer.

During their physicals, Dr. Ellithorpe checked their overall health, including heart and lungs, reflexes, temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate. He also examined their teeth, gums, eyes, and ears, lymph nodes, joints, and abdominal organs!

All 8 puppies received a clean bill of health, they all have homes, and they are growing up fast! 🐾

After a while of chewing on shoe laces, climbing into our laps, and chasing each other around the room, they decided it was time for a big snooze 💤 🤍

Thank you to Dr. D’Ambrosio and Maine Veterinary Medical Center for helping our team through this veterinary CPR training!

CPR can be a lifesaver when an animal's heart stops or they stop breathing. Through the Recover Initiative, Dr. D’Ambrosio helped us gain new skills and prepare our team for critical emergencies.

Leptospirosis (Lepto) is now considered a core vaccine for dogs according to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) guidelines. This means that it is recommended for all dogs, regardless of lifestyle or location.
!! This serious bacterial infection can affect both animals and humans !!

Key points about leptospirosis:
** Spread through contact with urine of infected animal or contaminated water and soil (common in rodents and raccoons)
** Symptoms: fever, vomiting, jaundice, muscle pain, lethargy
** Can cause kidney and liver failure if left untreated
** Preventable through vaccination

Protect your pets and family members:
** Vaccinate dogs
** Avoid letting pets drink from or swim in standing water
** Watch for symptoms and seek immediate care if concerned
** There is currently no vaccine available for cats. While cats can contract leptospirosis, it's less common than in dogs, and prevention focuses on minimizing exposure to infected animals and their urine.

Call us to discuss vaccination for your pets. Together, we can keep our animals and families safe! 🐾🩺🤍

The sooner we catch changes in your pet’s health, the sooner we can act.

Lab (pun intended) work, including blood tests, urinalysis, and f***l screens, can evaluate a dog's health by analyzing blood components, organ function, parasite checks, and other physiological parameters.
Routine lab work can detect potential health issues or confirm suspected conditions, allowing for early intervention and treatment. It helps us provide targeted care that keeps your pet feeling their best. 🐾 🌟 💛

Ask our staff about the many options we offer for lab work!

Unexpected emergencies and medical bills can be stressful. That is why we highly recommend **pet insurance**, to help alleviate this stress by providing financial protection! 🤍 🏥

Pet insurance companies typically divide their products into 3 main categories:
*Accident and Illness: Unexpected injuries and illnesses (Ear issues, UTIs, Lacerations, Diabetes, Gastrointestinal upset, etc.)
*Accident-Only: Covers only accidents, like broken bones, but not illnesses
*Wellness Plans: Routine care like vaccinations and checkups

Pet insurance plans are generally reimbursement plans – you pay up front and are reimbursed by the insurance provider. Some companies offer direct-pay to the veterinary hospital.

Things to Choose and Consider With A Policy:
Deductible, Reimbursement Rate, Maximum Payout Limit, Waiting Periods, Exclusions, Pre-existing conditions, Breed and Age.

Talk with our staff and research your options to see if pet insurance can help your pets and your family 🩺🐾👩🏽‍⚕️

Skunk encounters are more common at dawn/dusk during warm months, and especially during mating season (February - March).

** Skunk spray will actually get worse when it gets wet, so water and regular shampoo is no good.
** Contrary to popular belief, tomato juice is also unhelpful and will only make a huge mess!

Your best bet is to bathe your dog with a commercial grade shampoo. Our groomer, Natalie, offers a de-skunk treatment for these mishaps. She uses a special grooming technique and commercial shampoo designed to remove skunk odor. 😋 🛁🧼🐶

But what if your dog was sprayed in the middle of the night? You can make de-skunk shampoo from products around your house.
** Mix 4 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 part baking soda, and add a bit of Dawn dish soap. Apply the mixture to your pet while it's still bubbling. Mix ingredients as needed - not in advance.

❗Because skunks can carry rabies and other diseases and parasites, it’s important that your pets are current on their vaccines and preventatives. Reach out to our office to make sure your pet is up to date❗

Spring is here! Check out our Spring Safety Tips below to learn how to keep your best friend happy and healthy! 😎🌞

** Did you know lilies are extremely toxic to cats? Lilies (including but not limited to Easter, Daylilies, Asiatic, Tiger, Stargazer, and Oriental) are especially dangerous and can cause severe kidney damage and can be fatal. The entire lily plant is toxic: the stem, leaves, flowers, pollen, and even the water in a vase.

** Mosquitos, fleas, ticks, worms, and other parasites also enjoy the warm weather. Ask us about preventatives to keep your pets and families protected. Preventatives come in chewable, topical, collars, and more!
