Did you know that there are differences between left- and right-sided congestive heart failure? Clinical signs of congestive heart failure (CHF) vary significantly depending on which side your dog has it. There are many causes of CHF in dogs, but the most common are mitral valve insufficiency and dilated cardiomyopathy. If you are noticing your dog has difficulty breathing, has persistent coughing, or tires out very easily, these may be signs your dog could have a heart condition. Last send off this summer, Boonies!
Bailey moved to College Station from Cypress, Tx. She has been a Vet Assistant at Boonville Animal Hospital for 3 years, and was one of our Lead Technicians! She graduated from Texas A&M University in 2022 with a B.S. in Animal Science & in 2023 a M.S. in Biomedical Science. Sticking with the maroon vibe, Bailey is attending vet school at TAMU, and would like to pursue a career in emergency or mixed animal medicine!
Her hobbies outside of work include taking walks with her dogs Oakley & Po, as well as spending time at home with family. We’re thankful that she’ll still be involved at BAH since she’s so close and excited to see what her future holds!

It is possible for dogs to have obstructive sleep apnea. Unlike with humans, CPAP machines are not yet available for dogs. For obese dogs, it's recommended to change their diet to lose excess weight. If you recently added a female puppy to your family, it's important to understand their heat cycles. Proestrus is the start of the heat period where your dog’s body is preparing to mate and averages about nine days. The estrus phase is the mating phase and usually lasts around 9 days, but can be as short as 3 or as long as 21 days. The diestrus phase occurs directly after the “in heat” stage and lasts for about 2 months. Anestrus is the uterine repair phase, in which no sexual or hormonal behavior is present, and can last for anywhere from 90 to 150 days before the next proestrus stage begins.

Howdy Boonville community!
We want to introduce you to a fellow future veterinarian, Francesca Moreno! She is currently in her clinical year of vet school doing an externship with us.

Francesca is originally from Orange County, CA where she went to UC Davis. She majored in Women and Gender Studies with a minor in Sociocultural Anthropology. Francesca originally planned on becoming a lawyer, but ultimately felt pulled to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian. She attended Ross University of Veterinary Medicine, and is now at Texas A&M for her last year! After school her aspirations are to be a small animal veterinarian with interests in preventative medicine and oncology.

Outside of school Francesca loves hiking, yoga, reading, swimming, and spending time with her two dogs, Diego and Shrimp! If you see her this week in the hospital make sure to give her a warm welcome to BCS!

Research concludes that cats cannot have autism; however, there are many behavioral similarities between special-needs cats and humans with autism. Since autism is focused on human behavior, cats cannot be diagnosed, but they sometimes exhibit autism spectrum traits. Examples include becoming obsessed with hunting or chasing certain things, enjoying their alone time, being easily overstimulated, easily spooked by noises or bright lights, and even being overwhelmed by too much attention. Its true! Yawning is contagious for dogs as well as humans. Studies have shown that a yawn from you can trigger one from your dog. Caroline moved to College Station from Spring, TX and has been a vet assistant at Boonville for a little over a year now. She graduated in December 2022 from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences. This fall she will be pursuing her DVM from St. George’s veterinary school. Following vet school Caroline is interested in mixed animal practice, but is excited to see what the next 4 years hold and where they take her! When she's not at work, some of Caroline’s hobbies include: hiking with her dog Zeppelin, roadtrips, or reading a good book.

Puppy socialization is one of the essential ingredients for a happy, well-behaved, and confident dog. Missing out on socialization during puppyhood can contribute to behavior issues like leash reactivity and fear-based aggression. A week after your puppy has had their first round of vaccines, it's a good time to start doing puppy-safe socialization activities.
