HOT WEATHER IS HERE!!!!!
Is your dog overheated? Here are the signs and what you need to do.
As dog people, we love our dogs. We love them so much that we want to take them for walks and play outside with them. We want them by our sides as we do yard work. However, there are times we need to love them enough to leave them home in the air conditioning.

As the temperatures are heating up here in the Houston area, we are seeing more and more dogs coming into our hospital needing emergency treatment for heatstroke. (And while this article will focus on dogs, please be aware that cats can experience heatstroke as well. Never leave cats in vehicles or anywhere that they will not have adequate ventilation, shade and water.)

Your dog does not have words to tell you that he or she is hot. Your dog wants to please you and will generally keep going along until they can’t. There are cues a dog’s body will display that you need to be aware of and play close attention to:

excessive panting

a tongue, gums, inside of ears that are bright red

slowing down or stopping on walks/runs

drooling/salivating

signs of general discomfort

rapid heart rate

wide, stressed eyes

anxiety

seeking shade and water sources like puddles

As distress from heat exhaustion progresses to heat stroke, you may note:

gums that have turned pale

mental dullness

loss of consciousness

vomiting

diarrhea (may become black in color)

dark or red urine

seizures

uncoordinated movement (stumbling, dizziness)

collapse

Some dogs are more prone to heat exhaustion and stroke however, be aware that ALL dogs can suffer from the heat. Dogs who are older, overweight, or brachycephalic (the flat faced breeds) are often the first to suffer in the heat. Dogs with thick fur, short noses or those with pre-existing medical conditions are also more susceptible. By the way, your dog’s fur actually serves as an insulation from the heat and protection from sunburn so please do not shave them.

Dogs cannot sweat like humans do. In order to stay cool, dogs pant and use vasodilation (their blood vessels dilate to provide rapid dispersion of heat.) As a dog’s body temperature rises above normal, heat exhaustion will set in and as it continues to rise and the mechanisms for cooling become overwhelmed and fail, heat stroke, a serious medical emergency, occurs.

If your dog suffers heat exhaustion or stroke:

get your dog to a cooler area immediately

lower the body temperature by wetting your dog thoroughly with cool water, paying close attention to keeping it on their ears, paws, stomachs and inner thighs. Do NOT use cold water as this causes the blood vessels to constrict and we need them to be rapidly circulating to disperse the heat. (For very small dogs and/or puppies, use lukewarm water instead of cool.)

provide small amounts of cool or lukewarm water

Even if your dog seems to be recovering, make a call to your regular veterinarian or emergency veterinarian for advice and maybe a visit to be sure your dog is indeed safely out of danger.

If your dog has suffered a heat stroke, lower the body temperature as best as you can as get them to an emergency veterinarian immediately.

06/12/2024

Peruvian Inca Orchids are unique-looking sighthounds with an elegant, slim build. They come in small, medium, and large sizes and can be hairless (the most common type) or coated. The hairless variety almost always has an incomplete set of teeth.

Coat and Coloring
Hairless PIOs have just a few short hairs on the head and small patches on the lower tail and feet. Their skin can be any solid color or spotted with unpigmented areas.

The coated variety's hair length is short or medium with feathering on the neck, ears, and body. All coat colors are accepted under the breed standard.

Distinctive Physical Traits
PIOs have alert, intelligent expressions and strong, muscular bodies. Hairless Orchids feature “prick” or upright ears when on alert, whereas the coated variety has only semi-prick ears. Both types have low-set tails that the dogs carry raised in a round curve above the back when excited.

Peruvian Inca Orchid Temperament
Peruvian Inca Orchids are loyal dogs and very affectionate with their humans. They can, however, be wary around strangers and aren't the best choice for families with very small (and thus unpredictable) children.

These playful pups enjoy trips to the park and outings with the family. But they're not well-suited for full-time life outdoors. They also require early socialization and training to help them develop into well-mannered, predictable pets.

Sighthounds like the PIO can have a strong prey drive and are very fast. So, they should be supervised when around cats and other pets and kept on a leash if any animals they might mistake for prey are nearby.

Peruvian Inca Orchid History
The Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) is an ancient breed that dates as far back as 350 BC. Evidence of these dogs appeared on Moche, Chimu, Chancay, and Incan pottery. Interestingly, their urine was used in medicine and their body warmth was used to treat arthritis and respiratory conditions. On top of that, some people believed the breed brought good luck. Not bad for a little hairless dog!

After the Conquistadors overtook Peru, breeders crossed these small pups with larger dogs from other countries. And over time, this process resulted in the three distinct breed sizes that exist today.

Jack Walklin brought eight dogs from Peru to America in 1966 and used them to establish the breed—which he dubbed the Peruvian Inca Orchid—in the U.S. The PIO has been registered with the FCI since 1981 and has been eligible to compete in the AKC's Miscellaneous Class since 2011.

Peruvian Inca Orchid Care
Nutrition
Peruvian Inca Orchids thrive on high-quality food that's appropriate for their life stage. To help your dog maintain their slim physique, keep an eye on the amount of food you give them. And don't forget to account for treats. Ideally, they should make up no more than 10% of a dog's daily calorie intake.

Grooming
Hairless Orchids don't require brushing, of course, but they do still need occasional baths to stay clean. They also should wear sunscreen to protect their skin when outside on sunny days.

Coated Orchids need weekly brushing to remove loose fur and keep them looking their best. Both types need regular nail trims and ear cleanings as part of their standard care.

Lastly, good dental hygiene will support your dog's overall health. Dental disease is one of the most common health conditions in adult dogs. Left untreated, it can contribute to other serious issues. In addition to professional cleanings, establish an at-home dental care program that includes regular teeth brushing and veterinarian-recommended dental chews.

Exercise
PIOs are energetic dogs that need daily exercise to stay in tip-top shape. Backyard play sessions, brisk walks, and games of hide-and-seek are all good ways for them to stay active. They also enjoy—and are good at—agility, lure coursing, and rally work.

Training
Though intelligent, Peruvian Inca Orchids can be difficult to train. They require a firm, consistent approach that uses positive reinforcement to reward desired behaviors.

Breed Group
Terrier
The Terrier Group ancestors were bred to hunt and kill vermin. They are often characterized as feisty and energetic dogs whose sizes range from fairly small to much larger.

World Pet Memorial Day
Based on an article that first appeared at
GeniusVets

World Pet Memorial Day was created as a special day to memorialize beloved pets that have passed away. It is observed every year on the second Tuesday in June, and it is a great time to celebrate the lives of your pets. Although pets are only in our lives for a short time, they stay in our memories forever. It’s a small consolation, but it’s nice to know there are many ways you can honor the memories of your pets this June.

1. Create A Pet Photo Album
One great way to remember your pet is with an album full of photos of the good times you shared. From the time they were a kitten or a puppy till the day they passed on, you probably have many photos to reminisce with.

You can use physical photos and customize each page of the album, or make a digital album to look at.
There are many good, easy-to-use digital photo frames available nowadays. You could upload your pet pictures to one of these frames and display it somewhere in your home as a constant reminder of all the loving moments you experienced with your pet.
Another option is to upload your pictures to an album on your social media account. That way friends and family can remember your pet as well and comment with any special memories they may have.
2. Draw/Paint Your Pet
As long as you have all your best photos out of your pet, why not use one of your photos to draw or paint a portrait of them? Creating art is a wonderful catharsis, and you will have a long-lasting memory to show in your home. Everyone in the family can join in on this activity – the portraits don’t have to be perfect. It’s the thought that counts!

If you do decide you want a more “show-worthy” portrait to commemorate your pet with, there are many local artists that can be commissioned to re-create your favorite photo of your pet.

3. Get A Tattoo In Memory Of Your Pet
If you’re the type that would rather carry a memory around with you for all to see, you could get a tattoo portrait of your pet. Although this isn’t an activity that kids can take part in, they can help you decide what picture of your pet you want tattooed on yourself. Instead of (or in addition to) a portrait, you could opt for a tattoo of the name of your pet, a paw print, or a special quote that will remind you of your pet. One favorite quote is by Josh Billings, who said, “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” No matter what you choose, a tattoo is definitely one of the most dedicated ways you can remember your beloved pet.

4. Create A 3D Tribute To Your Pet
A shadow box or 3D collage is another way you can memorialize your pet that has passed. If you still have items that belonged to your pet, such as a leash, collar, tags, etc., you can arrange them in a shadow box as a nice display in honor of your cat or dog.

You can also get your kids involved and have them help you make a 3D collage. This can include paintings or drawings of your pet and his or her favorite things, plus anything 3-dimensional you might want to put on there, such as old chew toys, special blankets, bandanas, food bowls, and more. Spending time with your family while you create these tributes will help you all to celebrate your pet’s life in a meaningful way.

5. Plant A Pet Memorial Garden
If you’d rather express your creativity outdoors, a memorial garden is a wonderful way to ensure you always remember your pet. Memorial gardens can be as big or small as you want. You can plant flowers, plants, or trees in your own yard, or purchase space to plant a tree in honor of your pet in a local park. Every time you see these plants or trees, you’ll be reminded of the happy times you shared with your pet.

6. Go For A Walk/Hike
Take the whole family and go on a walk or hike in honor of your pet. You could take a walk on a familiar path that your dog loved to go on, or hike somewhere that you think he or she would have enjoyed. Even if your thoughts are with a beloved indoor-only cat, you could also go on a walk outside in an area your pet may have gazed upon from their favorite perch.

7. Donate Or Volunteer In Your Pet’s Name
There are many local rescue groups and charities that would love to honor your pet by assisting other animals in need. Donations can be monetary, but many rescue organizations also accept donations of dog and cat food, old towels and blankets, etc.

You could also donate your time and volunteer to support your favorite animal charity with anything they might need. In addition to working with animals, many organizations need other types of help, such as administrative work, publicity for the charity or local events, and more.

Although it may seem sad to some, thinking about pets that have passed on is a great solace to many. No matter how you observe World Pet Memorial Day this June, visiting them in your thoughts will ensure your pets are never truly gone.

It is with a very heavy heart I am letting everyone know that we are going to have to let Gilbert go over the rainbow bridge. He has been a staple in our clinic for 15 years now and we are truly going to miss him. He hasn't been doing well lately. We know it is going to be tough but we can't let him suffer. He just isn't enjoying life like he use to. If you would like to stop by today to see him and say goodbye you are more than welcome to. Things will NEVER be the same with out our Gilly. He will always be the BEST dog EVER!
