Joint pain in dogs is a common issue that can cause discomfort, lead to mobility problems, and restrict their daily activities. As pet owners, it's important to be aware of the signs that your dog is in discomfort.
1. Difficulty getting into or out of their bed or car
If your pet is struggling to get in and out of their bed, or is hesitant to jump into your car, it could be due to joint pain. This is especially true for older pets who may have arthritis. Changes to their daily routine can help, such as providing a ramp to get in and out of the car and offering a lower bed.
2. Unexplained lameness or limping, especially after exercise
If your pet seems fine one minute and begins to limp the next, it could indicate joint pain. Look out for limping after exercise or walks, stiffness that lessens with activity, and a noticeable reluctance to put pressure on one specific leg. It may be time for your pet to switch to shorter walks or lower impact exercise to avoid further discomfort.
3. Reluctance to go on walks, run, or jump
If your pet seems to be avoiding activities they once enjoyed, such as going on walks or playing fetch, it could be because they are experiencing joint pain. This can sometimes be mistaken for the pet being "lazy," but it's important to listen to their cues and not push them beyond their comfort level. Elevated pet beds, joint supplement treats, and a visit to the veterinarian can all help alleviate pain.
4. Unusual sensitivity when touched on certain parts of their body
If you notice your pet yelps or pulls away when you touch or pet certain areas, it could be a sign of joint pain. These areas may include the hips, knees, or spine. Don't ignore these symptoms, instead consider making an appointment with your vet to check for signs of inflammation or arthritis.
5. A decrease in activity levels or a reluctance to play games that involve jumping up and down
If your pet seems less active or less interested in playing, it could be due to joint pain. This is especially true if they once loved to play games that involve jumping up and down, like chasing a ball or frisbee. Many pets will start to hold back and avoid higher impact activities where they may experience more discomfort.
