Alright. Time for the annual turkey post that I’ll have to screen shot and send to people when I get the exact same questions lol

Turkey season is right around the corner and I’m gonna try to answer everything I always get. I’m gonna start with the beginning of the process and go to the end because every part is so important to getting a quality mount

I cannot fix feathers that are not there anymore. The shot and the flopping are the most important part. Head exposed. Not strutting. Easier said than done but if you know your gonna mount the bird be diligent about it. Get to him as quick as ya can. Grab him by the head until he is done flopping. No feet. Just doesn’t work. And if ya step on his head while he flops there is a good chance your turkey will be ruined by the time he is done
Be careful toting him out of the woods. Dont shove him in a vest. Leather tote or bag work the best for hauling him long miles. Ziplock bag and a zip tie over his head to avoid any blood on the feathers.
If your on the road I have a video on pinhoti project YouTube page of how to skin one and fly with it. If you wanna try it. All the info is in there.
If you’re driving and wanna keep the birds whole for a few days. Triple bag him. Make sure not to bend the tail and lay him on a bed of ice in a cooler. They will keep for a week or longer like this.
Frozen whole is always the best option if you have the means to do it.

Shipping a bird here from out of state. Make sure the bird has been frozen for at least a week. Plastic tote from Lowe’s with the yellow lid works best. Make sure not to bend the tail. Put insulation. Packing paper. Towels. Anything like that to keep him from moving around. Mail them on a Monday and just make sure he arrives by Friday. They take forever to thaw out.
When I receive your bird. By mail or you physically dropping him off at the shop. I take 700 down and 700 when I start on the bird. Generally 10-12 months between. That includes most poses and a limb or small floor base. Pedestals are extra.
When your bird is finished we will ship or deliver it for a fee. If you pick your bird up in person. Make sure to bring 3-4 bags of something heavy. 40 pounds or so. Corn. Sand bags. Dog food. Anything like that. So we can brace the limb and base and it won’t move. Make sure your vehicle is big enough to do this.
I generally take a set number of birds and fill up in May. If ya can’t get it in. Freeze it whole triple bagged till next spring.
I have also been working with a partner on the new feather art if you’re interested in that. Prices vary
Hope I covered everything. Good luck this spring.

Happy holiday every one!!

A few updates on where I’m at time wise

I have all of the deer and bear brought to me from December of last year complete or at least in the drying stage.

I’m waiting on about 10 pieces from the tannery from Jan-march of last year. Few bear, couple deer, and a few
Predators. If you are one of those customers it’ll probably be a few months till yours is completed.

I’m gearing up to start mounting a bunch of turkeys and wanted to remind you of a few things

1. If you haven’t paid in full yet I’ll call to get payment whenever I start on your turkey. If it isn’t paid for, I won’t mount it till it is.

2. A lot of times I’ll start in to a turkey project and relize another pose would work better for your bird. Always usually due to feather loss from the shot or flopping. I’ll always call to discuss but if you could be flexible that would be awesome, I’m trying to give you the best mount I can.

3. Picking your bird up is the biggest pain for me it seems. They are a bastard to haul. Anyone picking a bird up yourself needs to make sure you have room to do it in your vehicle. The birds are bigger than you think. You always need to bring 3-4 bags of something heavy. 40 pounds or so. Corn. Dog food. Whatever. To help brace the base or limb when hauling.

For a floor base. You need at least 42 inches of height from the floor to the ceiling on a strutter to get it in there.

For a limb you need a full size pickup or suv with the seats down. We will lay it sideways and use the heavy bags to brace it.

If you would like to eliminate all this headache and worry Let me
Deliver it to you.
1 hour away from shop 100 dollars
2 hours 200
3 hours. 300

Anyone further than that will need to come themselves or we will make arrangements to ship via trophy transport out of NC.

Thanks. You’ll be hearing from me soon

15 more spots left for deer this year. If I have already talked to you, your spot is safe. Will probably reserve them all for returning customers.
I won’t be in the first week of rifle season at all and probably won’t answer the phone but will return text and social media messages. I will resume normal hours the second week.

If your thinking what kinda taxidermist isn’t open during rifle season. It’s the kind that takes in too many turkeys in the spring 🤪🤪🤪.

Good luck people!
